The late-season rush by Cody Thorp and the Cazenovia boys golf team would continue, unabated, until they teed off Monday in the Section III Class B championships.
Hosting Solvay last Monday at Cazenovia Country Club, the Lakers prevailed, 221-248, with Thorp shooting a nine-hole total of 35, leading an effort where Cazenovia had the four lowest individual rounds.
Geoff Christiansen posted a 44, while Trevor Nourse and Hayden Fasset both had 46, ahead of the Bearcats’ top individuals, Jon Smolen and Conrad Skrupa, who each posted 48. Ryan Modzeleski contributed a 50 in the Lakers’ winning effort.
A day later, Cazenovia met Jordan-Elbridge at Millstone in the regular-season finale and won again, routing the Eagles 214-253.
Thorp continued to surge, his 36 the best round by eight shots. Christiansen and Alex Pezzi both shot 44, while Modzeleski and Ryan Mistur each posted 45 to match J-E’s low round by Robert Alcock as Max Bondgren added a 48 for the Eagles.
In girls golf, the Section III tournament would take place Tuesday at Kanon Valley Golf Club, but only after both Cazenovia and Chittenango made the short trip to Woodcrest Golf Club for last Wednesday’s Onondaga High School League Tournament.
The Lakers finished seventh with a team score of 453, while the Bears had a total of 476 for ninth place. Christian Brothers Academy, with a total of 417, edged Skaneateles and Marcellus (419 each) for the league title.
Maleigha Ellithorpe led the Lakers by tying for eighth place with an 18-hole score of 102. Just behind her, Erin Howles shared 13th place, posting a 104, Abbie Avery shot a 123 and was one shot ahead of Alexa Tillman’s total of 124.
For the Bears, Hannah Bailey had the best total of 114 to finish in the middle of the pack, three shots ahead of Hannah Turner. Jennie McIntosh finished with a 121 as Sarah Schmidt gained a 124 and Hannah Cleary was one shot behind Schmidt.
When Cazenovia and Skaneateles squared off in a Laker duel last Tuesday at Skaneateles Country Club, the visitors ended up on the wrong end of a 207-240 decision.
Chittenango dropped a 213-250 decision to Mexico last Monday afternoon. Schmidt shot a 57 at Oswego Country Club to lead the Bears, while Turner and Bailey each shot 63. For the Buccaneers, Olivia Dowdle had a 45 and Lydia Tyron contributed a 49.
