Good as the Baldwinsville track and field teams looked on many fronts during Thursday’s CNY Counties League National division championship meet at Liverpool High School Stadium, it could not quite catch up to the top two.
The boys Bees, with 144 points, were just a half-point behind Liverpool (144.5 points) for the second spot, though Cicero-North Syracuse won with 183 points. In the girls meet, B’ville had 103 points, with Liverpool (196 points) and C-NS (163 points) again fighting it out at the top.
B’ville went 1-2 in the boys 400-meter dash, where Greg Porceng won in 50.70 seconds and Kieran Sheridan, in 51.67 seconds, beat the rest of the pack for second place. Then, in the 200-meter dash, Sam Mahar prevailed in 22.68 seconds, while Porceng got third place in 23.55 seconds.
To cap off their efforts, Porceng and Sheridan, joined by Evan Vannatta and Tyler Luciano, went to the 4×400 relay and, in a time of 3:28.17, held off C-NS (3:28.80) as both of them left the rest of the field far behind them.
Moving to field events, Griffin Lynch got a victory in the pole vault by clearing 11 feet 6 inches ahead of C-NS’s Nate Osborne (11 feet), with Brad Krahl getting to third place by topping 10’6”.
Gabe Horan, throwing the shot put 45’6”, was second, half a foot behind C-NS’s Tyler Mosher (46’1”), while Jake Wicks was third with a toss of 43’2 ½”. Judson Fletcher threw the discus 114’11” and also finished second, behind West Genesee’s Evan Tuthill (123’7”), with Alex Garcia unleashing a third-place throw of 111’5”.
Evan Vannatta went 2:01.53 in the 800-meter run, a close second to Liverpool’s Stephen Schulz (2:00.98), while Denis Keegan finished seventh. Keegan, Ryan Delola, Joey Frink and Garrett Vannatta were fourth in the 4×800 relay in 8:28.05. Delola was sixth (10:55.41) and Andrew Vanslyke seventh (11:07.41) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
In a close 100-meter dash final, Mahar, in 11.23 seconds, was third behind Liverpool’s Brandon Mayfield (11.19) and C-NS’s Jeremiah Willis (11.22), while Jack Buis was seventh in 11.68 seconds.
Evan Donhauser made it to third place in the 110 high hurdles in 15.74 seconds before joining Buis, Mahar and Brandon Brown for a third-place time of 44.80 seconds in the 4×100 relay. Brown also was third in the long jump, going 19’4” as Austin Catalano (19’ ¾”) was sixth.
Kenny Stehle gained third place in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.03, with Justin Goodridge fifth in 1:01.90. Ben Timmons ran to fourth place in the mile in 4:41.58, while Evan Biedermann was fifth in 4:44.96 as Timmons (10:23.96) and Frink (10:33.19) were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 3,200-meter run.
Nate Jaquint got to fifth place in the triple jump with a top attempt of 39’9 ¾” as Catalano was sixth, going 38’11 ¼”. Also, Jaquint was sixth and Kevin Starr seventh in the high jump, though both cleared 5’6”.
Completing a boys-girls sweep in the 400 sprint, Katie Wicks, in 1:01.12, held off West Genesee’s Maria Matkoski (1:01.50) for the top spot, with Tina Bartelli fourth in 1:02.65. Wicks also finished fourth in the 200 in 28.94 seconds.
Moving to the 400 hurdles, the Bees’ Shylea Dukat went to the front and stayed there, winning in 1:08.31, more than a second ahead of Liverpool’s Abby Haley (1:09.34), while Mackenzie Wodka took seventh place in 1:17.05.
B’ville also took both sides of the 4×400, seeing Bartelli pair with Kelley Hull, Courtney Clute and Lauren Brushingham to get a time of 4:11.62, clear of C-NS (4:13.49) by less than two seconds.
Adrianna Straughter triumphed in the high jump, where she cleared 5 feet 2 inches, one inch better than Liverpool’s Megan Milazzo. Kourtnee Allen was fifth, topping 4’10” as Straughter also went 17.16 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and finished fourth.
Hull, in a time of 2:21.62, nearly won the 800, finishing second to Liverpool’s Morgan Chewning-Kulick (2:21.25) as Mia Bolton was seventh in 2;34.46. In the 4×800, Bolton, Anna Demer, Patricia Conlan and Sarah Rodman got fourth place in 10:30.80.
Katie Weaver (13.87 seconds) edged out Hannah Klaben (13.89 seconds) for sixth place in the 100 sprint. Klaben, Weaver, Kelsey Delola and Jordyn Boutilier were fourth in the 4×100 in 54.51 seconds. Lauren Place and Amanda Strenk tied for fifth in the pole vault.
Justus Holden-Betts needed 4:59.12 to finish fourth in the 1,500-meter run, while Leah Carpenter was eighth in 5:43.13. Elizabeth Fawwaz took fifth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:06.10 as Nadine Dickter (8:18.08) was seventh. Rodman took sixth place in the 3,000-meter run in 11:53.28.
Haleigh Jaquint gained fourth place in the triple jump by going 33’1 ¾”, while Klaben was ninth. Anna Miller got to fourth place in the shot put, heaving it 31’6” as Kayleigh Sattler took 10th place. Hailey Couchman gained fourth place in the long jump by going 14’11 ¼” ahead of Boutilier (14’1 ¼”) in eighth place.
Some B’ville athletes went to the C-NS Invitational on Saturday, where Garcia had a third-place shot put throw of 40’10”. Mike Lagana finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing 10’6”, and Starr topped 5’8” to get fifth place in the high jump.
Connor McManus was sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:06.43. Frink got sixth place in the mile in 4:39.62 as Porceng was ninth in the 200. B’ville took sixth place in the 4×800 relay in 9:50 flat and also was sixth (3:55.82) in the 4×400. Jason Kenneweg was seventh in the triple jump, going 37’ ¼”, while Luciano finished eighth in the long jump, going 19’2”.
In the girls C-NS meet, Couchman would rise to third place in the long jump, going 15’11 ¾”. Demer, Dukat, Bolton and Hull were fourth in the 4×800 in 11:46.36, while settling for fifth place in the 4×100 and seventh place in the 4×400.
Straughter took fifth place in the 100 hurdles in 17.09 seconds. Rodman got sixth place (8:31.80) and Leah Carpenter eighth place (9:10.91) in the 2,000-meter steeplechase. Fawwaz got sixth place in the 3,000 in 11:20.22, while Lauren Place was sixth in the pole vault
Conlan was seventh in the 1,500 in 5:16.30. Clute (1:02.71) and Dukat (1:02.74) were eighth and ninth, respectively, in the 400 sprint, with Bolton eighth in the 800 in 2:32.45, edging out Demer (2:32.77) in ninth place. Kaitlyn Asditt was eighth in the discus with a heave of 85’3”, while Klaben was ninth (31’ ¼”) in the triple jump.
