The Liverpool track and field teams came within a couple of points of accomplishing a sweep against powerful Fayetteville-Manlius in last Wednesday afternoon’s meet at LHS Stadium.
In a close, exciting girls meet, the Warriors had plenty of strong spots, but could not quite catch the Hornets, taking a 71-70 defeat.
Keosha Richardson’s fine season continued as she won the 100-meter dash in 12.65 seconds and added a title in the 200-meter dash in 26.06 seconds. Also, Richardson paired with Tymaiah Harper, Marcia Baskin and Marissa Baskin to get first place in the 4×100 relay in 50.93 seconds.
Liverpool also claimed four of six field events. Tionna Brown won two of them, clearing 5 feet in the high jump and going 16 feet 2 inches in the long jump as Sarah LaValley threw the discus a season-best 110’8” and Kelley Townley cleared 10 feet for another win in the pole vault.
F-M stayed in front, though, thanks to its usual strength in running events, led by Sophia Ryan’s pair of wins in the 800 (2:25.11) and 400 sprint (1:03 flat) and Gwenn Shepardson taking the 100 hurdles (16.66 seconds) and 400 hurdles (1:10.51). Plus, the Hornets claimed the two other field events as Cady Barns won the triple jump (33’6 ¼”) and Brittany Travis won the shot put with a throw of 30’8”.
By contrast, the Liverpool boys team routed F-M 95-46 to improve to 6-0, with two wins apiece from Brandon Mayfield and Nazir Murray. In the 100, Mayfield went 11.4 seconds, following it up by taking the 200 in 23.48 seconds and then
Meanwhile, Murray went 15.95 seconds in the 110 high hurdles and won the 400 hurdles in 1:04.07, In between those events, Murray and Mayfield joined Donald Frost and K Wailes to win the 4×100 relay in 45.01 seconds as part of a relay sweep.
Ben Petrella and Terrrell Coleman joined Collin Gwilt and Spencer Schulz as Liverpool went 8:26.68 in the 4×800, with Coleman, Schulz, Mike Mahan and Josh Hickmott going 3:40.48 in the 4×400. Petrella went 9:51.33 in the 3,200-meter run as Coleman prevailed in the 800 in 2:05.66.
Though F-M was strong in field events, Liverpool still got both throwing titles. Andrew Stonebarger heaved the discus 110’7”, while Arthur Bittel beat the field in the shot put with a toss of 42’11”.
No drama was found when Cicero-North Syracuse hosted last Wednesday afternoon, as the boys Northstars rolled to a 123-18 win and the girls defeated the Maroons 112-29.
Matt Killian, running the 100 in 11.2 3 seconds, began a sprint sweep where Jeremiah Willis went 23.08 seconds in the 200 and Matt Williams went 53.77 seconds in the 400. Ed Mahana took the 400 hurdles in 58.31 seconds, with Joe Williams rolling to a win in the 110 high hurdles in 15.35 seconds.
David Ware took first place in the 800 in 2:08.34 after Andrew Bearkland won the mile in 5:01.65 and before Noah Poirier claimed the 3,200 in 10:26.61. George Reader had a first-place triple jump of 41’2” as Nate Osborne cleared 11 feet in the pole vault. Tyler Mosher threw the shot put 48’4” and Kaleb Woodcock threw the discus 102’9”.
Bearkland, Ware, Poirier and Sam Barber went 8:47.87 to win the 4×800 relay. Willis, Matt Kilian, Anthony Pauli and Landry Rogers would take the 4×100 in 53.77 seconds as Williams, Zach Kennedy, Allen Garnes and Allen Wells won the 4×400 relay in 3:37.23.
In the girls meet, Cassandra Baldwin won twice, going 15’8 ½” in the long jump and 16.36 seconds in the 100 hurdles. Kierrah Butler swept the shot put (34 feet) and discus (92’5”, with Shayla Webb putting up a top triple jump of 33’6” and Liliana Klemanski clearing 5’2” in the high jump.
Back on the oval, Annina Marullo followed up her win in the 1,500 (5:11.39) by running the 3,000 in 11:48.92. Abbey Szumloz won the 400 hurdles in 1:14.32 as Sarah Davis ran the 800 in 2:29.34 and Sasha Pulaski took the 100 sprint in 12.62 seconds.
Davis began the relay sweep by pairing with Megan Trubia, Molly Camire and Aviana Fedele to take the 4×800 in 10:44.61 Pulaski, McKenna Bradford, Amanda Reilly and Sydney Florczyk took the 4×100 in 52.34 seconds as Szumloz, Marie LeRoy, Ashyln Slate and Lauren Witek went 4:24.51 in the 4×400.
