All season long, the Skaneateles boys golf team found itself looking up at Marcellus in the OHSL Liberty division standings because it dropped two head-to-head matches against the Mustangs on March 30 and April 12.
But when the two sides gathered again last Monday as part of the West Side Invitational at Marcellus Golf Club, the Lakers got the best of it – and did so on the Mustangs’ home course, making it even sweeter.
In all, eight teams took part in the tournament, and the four lowest scores counted. Skaneateles, with a 183, edged out Marcellus by two shots, while Cazenovia finished third with 190 and Westhill was fourth with a total of 195.
Individually, it was Cazenovia’s Cody Thorp taking medalist honors with a nine-hole score of 39 in cool, windy conditions. But then Skaneateles golfers Sam Clymer, with a 41, and Jacob Patalino, with a 43, claimed the next two spots, each of them ahead of the top two Marcellus scores of 44 by Frank Szczech and 45 by Jay Colella.
When the Mustangs’ Carter Austin and Nick Sonnacchio each finished with 48, the Lakers needed a combined 100 from its next two players to prevail. That happened when Luke Palmer finished with a 48 and seventh-grader Ty Jones, continuing his magical spring, posted a clinching 51.
To start its week, the Skaneateles girls golf team hosted rival Marcellus and lost, 211-229, to the Mustangs. Jillian Barker shot a 53 at Skaneateles Country Club, but three Marcellus golfers – Mary Colella, Erin Hass (51 each) and Hannah Abbot (52) – topped those efforts.
Then came a three-way match on Tuesday at Butternut Creek where Skaneateles, shooting a 165, beat Westhill’s total of 171, but could not keep up with host Jamesville-DeWitt, who extended its undefeated run through the Onondaga High School League and prevailed with a 157.
Among individuals, Jenna Field gave the Lakers a 39, just behind J-D’s Lena Jones (36) and Westhill’s Shannon Bunce (38). Three other Lakers – Breanna Sisson, Karah Blair and Addison Gremly – finished with 42.
It was close again Thursday at Camillus Country Club, where Skaneateles took a 189-192 defeat in a head-to-match against Westhill.
Barker led with a 45, but trailed Bunce, who had a 43 to pace the Warriors. Field, Blair and Breanna Sisson all finished with totals of 49, yet the Warriors hung on because Gabbi LoCourto and Lydia Stevenson both shot 48 and two others, Madeleine Jones and Ellie Masterpole, finished at 51. The Lakers’ record fell to 4-6.
