A mere three days after taking the top spot in the April 29 Chittenango Invitational, the Liverpool boys track and field team continued to stretch out its advantage in the CNY Counties League by sweeping a three-way meet against Baldwinsville and West Genesee.
Success in distance races and relays made the difference for the boys Warriors as it easily turned aside the Wildcats 103-38, but had to work hard to earn a 77-64 victory over the Bees.
Having won the Fleet Feet Mile at Chittenango, Ben Petrella followed it up with a time of two minutes, 1.33 seconds to win the 800-meter run and another victory in the 3,200-meter run in 9:37.92. He also paired with Terrell Coleman, Collin Gwilt and Connor Sheldon to win the 4×800 relay in 8:23.07.
Michael Mahan rolled to a win in the 400-meter dash in 51.37 seconds right after helping Nazir Murray, Brandon Mayfield and Donald Frost go 44.66 seconds in the 4×100 relay. Liverpool’s relay sweep completed when Mahan, Coleman, Gwilt and Peter Gonzales went 3:31.39 to win the 4×400.
B’ville provided stiff opposition in the sprints (where Sam Mahar won the 100 and 200-meter dashes) and field events. But Frost still won the triple jump, going 40 feet 4 inches, while Andrew Stonebarger, with a discus throw of 115’2”, was four inches behind WG’s Evan Tuthill.
The Liverpool girls track team also swept its meet against Baldwinsville and West Genesee, topping the Bees 92-49 and holding off the Wildcats 82.5-57.5.
Alexis Bittel led a balanced Warriors effort, prevailing in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.07 seconds and going 15’5” to win the long jump. In other field events, Sarah Lavalley threw the shot put 103’1”, while Kelley Townley cleared 9 feet in the pole vault.
Kierra Richardson roared to first place in the 200-meter dash in 26.69 seconds. Tymaiah Harper won the 100 sprint in 12.90 seconds as Liverpool overcame WG’s sweep of distance races, plus a pair of titles by the Wildcats’ Carly Benson in the 400 hurdles (1:10.88) and 800 (2:20.37).
Another three-team meet on Wednesday saw Liverpool easily sweep Corcoran and Auburn on both sides.
In the girls meet, Liverpool topped Auburn 111-30 and Corcoran 108.5-22.5, seeing Richardson go 17.7 seconds in the 100 sprint and Bittel win the 100 hurdles in 17.2 seconds. Natalie Kurz won the 3,000-meter run (11:37.4) as Vanessa Eberhard ran the 800 in 2:36.5 and Amelia Johnson took the 400 hurdles in 1:14.8.
Townley only topped 8 feet in the pole vault, but still won it as Lavalley had a top discus throw of 102’7” and Tionna Brown won the long jump, going 15’2 ¼”. Liverpool swept the 4×100 (52.8 seconds), 4×400 (4:24.3) and 4×800 (11:03.8) relays as Richardson, Eberhard, Juliana Basla, Morgan Chewning-Kulick, Kristina Moore, Windsor Ardner, Alexus Price, Marcia Baskin, Marissa Baskin, Mallory Woytowicz and Lindsay Reale all took part.
