Once more, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls track and field team turned away all challengers in the OHSL Freedom division, sweeping through last Wednesday afternoon’s three-way meet against Homer and Phoenix.
The Red Rams topped the Trojans 85-56 and routed the Firebirds 121-19, getting four individual victories from Alexandria Payne, who cleared 4 feet 8 inches in the high jump and went 15.4 seconds to dominate the 100-meter hurdles. Lauren Saletsky was second in the high jump, clearing 4’4”.
In a 100-meter dash duel with Homer’s Alsasce Sanders, Payne prevailed, 12.8 seconds to 12.9, and Payne grabbed a fourth title in the 200-meter dash in 26.6 seconds to Sanders’ 27.0.
Sophia Vinciguerra was first in the 3,000-meter run in 11:18.9, with Elena Haarer first in the 800-meter run in 2:32.8 as Abby Palin was second (5:18.5) to Homer’s McKayla Crawford (5:13 flat) in the 1,500-meter run.
Lainey Foti was second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:17.2 as Chloe Hayward took second (1:06.8) in the 400-meter dash, but Hayward joined Haarer, Alexia Carr and Kaylee Philleo to push J-D to first place in the 4×400 relay in 4:27.4. Vinciguerra, Hannah Butler, Megan Brown and Rebecca Shen won the 4×800 relay in 10:37.2.
Gabrielle Tanksley cleared 8’6” in the pole vault as part of a 1-2 finish with teammate Sara Signorelli (8 feet), while Ciarra Norris went 30’5” in the triple jump to edge Sanders (30’2)’as Jessica Pace was second (74’1”) in the discus.
The boys meet proved a close one, but J-D did get out of it with a split, edging Phoenix by a 71-69 margin, but unable to keep up with Homer in an 80-61 loss to the Trojans.
J-D’s boys went from there to Friday’s New Hartford Invitational, where with 22 points it finished 11th in a 22-team field that included plenty of large schools, including Cicero-North Syracuse, who with 118 points topped Baldwinsville (71 points) and Liverpool (63 points) for team honors.
Nearly half of those points were gained in the 4×400 relay, where the J-D quartet of Joey Armenta, Johann Ebert, Mike Potamianos and David Fikhman went 3:33.71 and prevailed by a comfortable margin over Liverpool (3:35.22) and the field. The Rams were also eighth in the 1,600 sprint medley and ninth in the distance medley relay.
Trey Greene unleashed a long jump of 20’1” and was second to C-NS’s Jeremiah Willis, who won with 20’5 ½”.
Patrick Dye was seventh in the mile in 4:33.48, with Nolan Roosa seventh in the 110 high hurdles in 16.64 seconds, just missing the final as Jhakeer Jamison did the same in the 100-meter dash, finishing eighth in 11.64 seconds to go with an eighth-place finish in the long jump behind Greene.
Jamison, Potamianos, Jan Ramirez and Trey Greene finished fifth in the 4×100 relay in 45.08 seconds, with Almighty Bornfreedom fifth in the triple jump by leaping a season-best 39’11”. Alex Le tied for ninth in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet, while Ramirez was 10th in the shot put and Henry Middleton was seventh in the discus, heaving it 116 feet.
J-D’s girls team was part of Rome Free Academy’s Copper City Classic on Saturday afternoon, picking up 49 points for sixth place out of 19 sides. Again, large schools dominated the top spots, with Section II’s Bethlehem prevailing as the Eagles earned 107 points and RFA (81 points) was second.
Vinciguerra, in a time of 5:00.20, was second in the 1,500, though well behind Hamilton star Sage Hurta, who won in a meet-record 4:36.81. Butler got third place in the 3,000 in 10:58.76, while Haarer was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:11.61 and Brown was fourth (8:10.38) in the 2,000-meter steeplechase.
Tanksley and Signorelli were third and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault, each of them clearing 8’6”. Mariah Williams got third place in the discus with a throw of 99’5” as Norris, in the five-event pentathlon, earned fourth place with 2,173 points.
Amanda Semmel, Allison Virgo, Aliah Mashie and Isabella Budelmann went 4:48.43 in the 1,600 sprint medley, earning a third-place finish. J-D was also sixth in the 4×800 in 11:00.75.
