Once it got rid of the rain that postponed a mid-week showdown with Fayetteville-Manlius, the Baldwinsville boys tennis team began to find success again – until the match with the Hornets was made up on Saturday, and the Bees again fell by a 7-0 margin.
Before that, though, B’ville hosted Auburn last Thursday afternoon, the mixing up its roster and winning a majority of points in both singles and doubles, leading to a 5-2 victory over the Maroons.
Not having to worry about Auburn star Scott Minnoe in singles, B’ville nearly swept all three matches. Alex Shaban beat William Clark 6-3, 6-1, with Dan Watkins taking out Dan Coscahov 6-3, 6-0 and Sam Damato taking Connor Davia to three sets, but falling to Davia 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
Minnoe did pair with Trevor Bohannon in doubles to defeat Nick Walker and Chris Dotto 7-5, 6-3, but that was the Bees’ lone blemish on the doubles side.
Mason Soeder and Scott Ferrari worked hard in a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Jack Farrington and Luke Parker, while Isaiah Demoski and Ryan Shirk nearly got a shutout in their 6-1, 6-0 romp over Quinn Hukee and Henry Foresman. Liam Wicks, pairing with Becket Plumley, handled Nate Wawro and Matt Mcglire 6-3, 6-0.
These same two sides were supposed to meet again on Friday afternoon, but it got rained out, so B’ville waited for things to dry and for Saturday’s trip to F-M, where, again, the Hornets kept the Bees off the board.
Twice, the doubles matches went to three sets. Walker and Dotto grabbed the second set from F-M’s Vince Sorrentino and James DeSorbo, but still lost, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. It was the same in third doubles, where Shaban and Damato went up and down in a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 defeat to Joel Fafrella and Dilan Judge.
Otherwise, Soeder and Ferrari fell to Ravi Dhawan and Vince Grasso 6-3, 6-2, with Dan Watkins and David Rush falling to Rohan Dhawan and Richard Wang 6-2, 6-3. Up in singles, Chris Fuller lost, 6-2, 6-2, to Michael Miller, with Shirk falling to Taran Judge 6-1, 6-0 and Wicks taking a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Tom Miro.
Aside from making up the other Auburn match, B’ville would also face Liverpool, Syracuse East and Cicero-North Syracuse in the last full week of the regular season.
