Nearly two weeks after it took a season-opening defeat to Marcellus, the Skaneateles boys golf team got back on the course, not waiting for the temperatures to warm up or for course conditions to dry out.
Skaneateles engaged with Cazenovia last Monday afternoon at Cazenovia Country Club, and though the hosts had the top individual, the visiting Lakers had far more depth on hand and prevailed by a 222-236 margin.
Cazenovia’s Cody Thorp shot a superb nine-hole score of 36 in cold, wet conditions at CCC, by far the best individual score, but seven different Skaneateles golfer managed 51 or lower to make up the deficit.
CarterStiegel led that group, posting a 42, with Jacob Patalino and Sam Clymer each finishing at 44. Raymond Falso matched Cazenovia’s Hayden Fasset with a 45 as Luke Palmer produced a 47, with Steve Ciaccio getting a 50 and Ty Jones a 51. Graham McCarthy added a 57.
A rematch with Marcellus followed a day later at Skaneateles Country Club, but it ended in the same way as the first encounter, with the Lakers falling to the Mustangs 233-240. Cold temperatures and high winds sent the scores soaring. Clymer and Jones both finished at 46, but that trailed Jay Colella, who led Marcellus with a 42.
But Skaneateles rebounded on Thursday afternoon at SCC, defeating Solvay 238-253. Patalino shot a 40, the same as the Bearcats’ Jon Smolen, with Falso contributing a 43. Clymer and Palmer both shot rounds of 51 and Jones contributed a 53 to help Skaneateles pull away.
Getting its season underway, the Skaneateles girls golf team ventured to Marcellus last Tuesday and, like its male counterparts two weeks earlier, could not tame the Mustangs, taking a 228-233 defeat.
Karah Blair led the Lakers, shooting a 56, but that trailed two Marcellus golfers, Mary Colella (49) and Hannah Abbot (52). Though Joe Barker and Jenna Field both finished with 59, they could not overcome the early edge Colella and Abbot had built.
Home matches were set for later in the week against Jamesville-DeWitt and Westhill. First, the Lakers took on J-D and suffered a narrow 205-207 defeat to the Red Rams despite a 50 posted by Jillian Barker.
It was nearly as close against Westhill, but it carried the same result – the Warriors taking out the Lakers 214-218. Barker again had a solid round, posting a 51, but Westhill’s Shannon Bunce matched that total and her teammate, Julia Miesner, did better, finishing with a 50.
