Having already recorded a win over Skaneateles before the snow returned early in April, the Marcellus boys golf team didn’t mind doing the same again once the snow melted.
Amid high winds at Skaneateles Country Club last Tuesday afternoon, the Mustangs again topped the Lakers 233-240, with much of that seven-stroke margin stemming from the fact that Jay Colella shot the low individual round of 42, four shots better than Skaneateles teammates Sam Clymer and Ty Jones.
Westhill had its opening match of the season on that same day, hosting Cazenovia, and pulled out a 217-220 decision at Camillus Country Club. Tim Alcaro shot a 41, three shots behind the Lakers’ top individual, Cody Thorp, but the Warriors made up ground by having John Marshall shoot a 42 and David Bleskoski contribute a 43.
At Pine Grove, Jordan-Elbridge took on Solvay, with the Eagles prevailing 251-258 despite a low individual score of 41 by the Bearcats’ Jon Smolen.
Robert Alcock led J-E with a 43, with Max Bondgren producing a 45 and Nate Melfi adding a 48. Cole Melfi had a 54 and Ben Sullivan managed a 61. To help Smolen on Solvay’s side, Colby Skrupa got a 52 and Drew LaMont added a 53, just ahead of Conrad Skrupa (55) and Joe Sardo (57).
Solvay took its shot at Skaneateles on Thursday, but lost, 238-253, though Smolen matched the Lakers’ Jacob Patalino with the low individual round of 40. As five Skaneateles golfers shot 53 or lower, only Colby Skrupa, with a 48, and Conrad Skrupa, with a 51, managed the same for the Bearcats as Noah Capella gained a 54 and Jacob Purce a 60.
Marcellus, meanwhile, maintained its hot start by matching Westhill’s result and beating Cazenovia 217-235. Colella earned a 39 at Marcellus Golf Club to beat Thorp (41) by two shots and got plenty of help as Carter Austin shot a 42, Tim Sheridan contributed a 44 and two others, Ryan Roseboom and Frank Szczech, each posted 46.
Still on its home course, Westhill turned back J-E 213-260 on Thursday, with remarkable consistency. Sean Dadey led with a 40 at CCC, with Bleskoski getting a 42 and Jake Mullen earning a 43. Alcaro and Josh Marshall each had a 44 to beat Bondgren, who led the Eagles with a 45, three shots ahead of Alcock’s 48.
Not debuting until Thursday afternoon, Bishop Ludden took a 261-285 defeat to Weedsport. Dan Cacchione shot a 50 at Tuscarora Golf Club, one ahead of Matt DeAngelis, with Tom Burke adding a 58 and Ben Hayes shooting a 62. For the Warriors, Ashton Sheils shot a 42, with Brandon Androsko contributing a 48.
It took until Friday for Solvay to find the win column, topping Altmar-Parish-Williamstown 244-276 largely because Smolen dazzled with a 35 at Pine Grove. Jacob Purce, with a 50, was much further back, with Conrad Skrupa posting a 51.
While that was going on, girls golf teams finally got underway, and Marcellus managed to match its male counterparts by defeating its rivals from Skaneateles last Tuesday afternoon in a 228-233 decision.
Over nine holes at Tuscarora, Mary Colella shot a 49 to lead the Mustangs. Hannah Abbot had a 52, four shots ahead of the Lakers’ top individual, Karah Blair, while Erin Hass contributed a 63 and Kendall Koloski finished with a 64.
A day later, Westhill debuted at home and got a 216-229 victory over Oswego. Shannon Bunce paced the Warriors with a 45, six shots ahead of the Buccaneers’ Lydia Tyron as Angela Vigliotti posted a 54 and Gabbi LoCurto finished with a 56.
Marcellus made it two wins in as many matches on Thursday by handling Chittenango 220-256. Again, Colella led the way, picking up a 46, just ahead of Abbot’s total of 50. Elise LaBombard stepped up and matched Grace Alexander as they each shot 62. Sarah Schmidt paced the Bears with a 61.
Westhill prevailed, too, getting its own victory over Skaneateles. The 214-218 match at Skaneateles Country Club saw Julia Miesner emerged with a 50 to edge out Bunce for individual honors, though Bunce still shot a 51, the same as the Lakers’ top player, Jillian Barker.
