Things are finally underway for the Cazenovia baseball team, who had to wait, like all the other Central New York teams, for the snow to melt, and then the fields to dry, before it could take the field.
Yet when the Lakers did so, it came last Friday against a tough Solvay side, and lost that game, but quickly rebounded on Saturday afternoon with an 8-1 victory over the Jordan-Elbridge Eagles.
This week, Cazenovia would take on Madison, Marcellus and Bishop Grimes, and then head to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina during the school break for a full slate of games, including OHSL Liberty division contests against Westhill and Skaneatleles.
When the Chittenango baseball team, following several weather postponements, took to the field for last Wednesday’s opener at Phoenix, it turned into a thriller where, in the end, the Firebirds had the last at-bats, which made the difference as it edged the Bears 11-10.
Twice, Chittenango went out in front, 4-1 in the second inning and 8-4 in the fourth inning. Both times, Phoenix stormed back, eventually taking a 10-9 lead into the top of the seventh, where the Bears scratched across a run to tie it again, but the Firebirds won it in the bottom of the seventh.
Wyatt Myers smashed a home run, one of his three hits on the day as he led Chittenango with two RBIs and scored three runs. Zane Garvey walked twice, added a hit and drove in two runs as Tom Rooney, who had an RBI, matched Myers by scoring three times.
Zane Cowburn and Matt Milliman joined Rooney by driving in runs as Myers pitched 3 2/3 innings, with Cowburn and Garvey also seeing mound stints. Dan Frawley led Phoenix’s attack with a double and three RBIs.
Now the Bears faced Oswego, whom Myers no-hit last May 9. That didn’t come close to happening here, for instead Chittenango took an 11-2 defeat to the Buccaneers, who picked up runs in each of the first five innings as Alex Davies, with three RBIs, set the pace.
Seamus St. Leger pitched three innings and got the loss, with Rooney and Tom Valentine working in relief. Single runs in the third and fifth innings was all the Bears could manage as Justin Gondeck had two hits and an RBI, with St. Leger and Matt Milliman scoring those runs.
On Saturday, Chittenango lost, 4-2, to Fulton. Though Valentine and Culkin drove in runs and kept the game close early, the Bears, trailing 3-2, could not pull even, and the Red Raiders tacked on an insurance run in the seventh.
Cowburn pitched 4 2/3 innings and took the loss, with Myers working the rest of the way in relief as he and Rooney got two hits apiece at the plate.
