Hamilton — For a second time in the 2015-16 season, the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team put up plenty of points in a Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association meet, but could not quite make it to the top of the standings.
In Friday’s MVITA Partner Relays at Colgate University’s Sanford Field House, the Lakers had 89 points, but finished third as Clinton, with 103 points, edged out Rome Free Academy (97 points) for that top spot. Chittenango, with 25 points, finished sixth.
Unlike the Dec. 11 season opener, no relay races were run. Instead, the two best times, heights and distances in various events were considered.
Maria Stalder helped the Lakers win the 1,000-meter run, claiming the individual race in three minutes, 19.93 seconds over Chittenango’s McKenzie Dombroski (3:21.54), with Stalder and Zoe Shephard winning in a combined 6:49.92. No one else was under six minutes as the Bears (7:18.31) finished fifth.
Also, in the 3,000-meter run, Meggie Hart needed 11:22.47 to top the field by more than eight seconds as she and Adrien Owens went 23:27.02 to top Clinton (23:46.12) by a comfortable margin.
Kirsten Underwood won the individual portion of the 55-meter dash in 7.73 seconds, just ahead of RFA’s Tekitha Posey-Barry (7.75 seconds), and Underwood paired with Delaney Yates for second place (16.01 seconds) to the Black Knights (15.64).
Underwood and Olivia McEntee went on to take second place in the 300-meter dash, again with RFA (56.85 seconds) keeping the Lakers (57.01 seconds) from the top spot. Yates and Scout Mueller were second in the 55-meter hurdles in 20.57 seconds to RFA’s 19.76, with Chittenango (23.13 seconds) sixth.
In the 600-meter run, Chittenango saw Kaitlyn Swain and McKenzie Dombroski finished second (3:40.07) to Clinton (3:37.61), with the Lakers’ Maria Stalder and Hope King third in 3:41.17.
Cazenovia’s best finish in a field event came in the high jump, where Tori Fischer and Jess Macheda cleared a combined 9 feet 2 inches, something only Clinton (9’6″) could top. Fischer also helped Katie Robbins finish third in the pole vault, clearing 14’6″.
continued — Macheda and Brenna Hughes were third in the long jump with total leaps of 27 feet 5 1/2 inches, with Chittenango’s Krissy Roberts and Alyssa Kolb (25’8″) in fourth place. Roberts and Kolb added a fourth-place triple jump finish with leaps of 56’11 1/4″. Fischer and Caeli Carroll were sixth in the weight throw.
In the boys MVITA Partner Relays, Cazenovia picked up 37 points and finished sixth out of 14 teams, with Chittenango getting to seventh place with 31 points and, again, Clinton on top, with 73 points to runner-up RFA’s 70 points.
Ray Satchwell and Evan Begley, with combined attempts of 64’8 1/4″, climbed to third place in the triple jump, where Chittenango’s Devin Myers and Jacob Blaszkow got sixth place.
Sawyer Hunt and Will Kmetz were third in the shot put with throws of 77’9″ between them, and Satchwell cleared 5’4″ in the high jump for fourth-place points as Will Huftalen and Dan McKillop got third in the pole vault, with combined clearances of 16’6″.
Dylan Hahn and Dan McKillop took fourth in the 55 sprint in 14.94 seconds, while Jimmy McPherson and Tony Koppers were fifth in the 3,200-meter run. Hahn and Satchwell gained fifth place in the long jump as Jack Eldred and Angelo Annato were sixth in the 55 hurdles.
The Bears’ best finish came in the 600, where Nick Stanton and Ward Beley were second in 3:13.03 to New Hartford’s 3:11.60. Stanton also got second place in the individual long jump, going 17’10” as he and Devin Myers were fourth (32’6 3/4″) on the team side.
