Cazenovia — Doing their part to add to Cazenovia high School’s fall season full of championship achievements, the girls volleyball Lakers had little trouble making it to next week’s Section III Class C final.
Amid the four-team sectional Class C bracket, the top-seeded Lakers met no. 4 seed Hannibal in Wednesday night’s semifinal at Buckley Gym, and took just three sets to eliminate the Warriors.
Right from the outset, Cazenovia displayed its intentions, rolling through the opening set 25-8. While utilizing its entire roster, the Lakers still managed to control the other two sets, claiming them by 25-15 and 25-19 margins.
Molly Carges led the way with 10 kills and two aces. Danielle Tedesco augmented her six kills with a five aces and two blocks, while Paige Nardella had a team-best six aces, to go with a pair of kills.
Maleigha Ellithorpe contributed three aces and three assists as Morgan Mapstone picked up five kills. Jess Macheda, with six assists, and Lauren Lyons, with five assists, paced a back line where Sarah Dickinson and Morgan Hodinger grabbed three kills apiece and Stacy Richer earned two kills.
A day later, Cazenovia found out that it would face no. 3 seed Skaneateles in the sectional Class C final that takes place next Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Onondaga Community College’s Allyn Hall. Those other Lakers survived a five-set battle with no. 2 seed Solvay to win the other semifinal.
The winner between Cazenovia and Skaneateles at OCC moves on to the state tournament, that begins with the Class C regional final on Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. at Chittenango High School.
