The opening day ceremonies for the Cazenovia Baseball Softball Association were held last Saturday, May 7, starting with a parade from Burton Street Elementary School to the Burton Street fields. The Association’s two girls softball teams, two “minor” baseball teams and three “major” baseball teams — a total of about 75 athletes — participated in the event. Association Vice President Brian Sparks made a few opening remarks and introduced Tim Mascari, the new Cazenovia High School JV baseball coach, who participated in the first pitch ceremony. Mascari threw out a first pitch to player Peter McCole and then played catcher himself to the first softball pitch thrown out by player Eliza Gurney. Some teams then played games at the Burton Street fields while others traveled to Fabius and DeRuyter to play away games. Players from one of the two softball teams also sang the National Anthem. “We’re really glad we had great weather,” Sparks said.
