CNY Reads One Book is a community-wide reading program designed to promote reading, discovery, and the sharing of different perspectives by encouraging area residents to read the same book and participate in programs related to that book. The program is organized by the CNY Reads Consortium, a partnership between arts, education, and social-service organizations throughout the region.
The CNY Reads One Book selection for this year is New York Times Bestseller “There There” by Tommy Orange.
“There There” is the story of 12 individuals from Native communities, all traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow, and all connected to one another in ways they don’t yet realize. Together, their voices tell of the plight of the urban Native American — grappling with a complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and spirituality, and with a plague of addiction, abuse, and suicide.
How can you get involved? Start by reading “There There.” Better yet, share the book with friends and family by hosting your own book club. Book club kits are available from the library and include 12 paperback books, a reader’s guide with discussion questions, and come in an easy to carry tote. This award-winning novel is also available as an e-book, audiobook, or in large print through the library.
After reading the book, join the conversation by attending a book discussion at NOPL Brewerton at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, or one of many other discussions, screenings, and presentations being held throughout the community.
