The Summer Reading Program is well under way at the Northern Onondaga Public Libraries (NOPL). To date, 807 children and teens have enrolled in the program, and they have read an impressive 2,664 books!
When kids and teens enroll in the program it’s not “all work and no play” — kids who keep track of their reading receive prizes such as books and small toys. Teens are eligible for prizes such as gift certificates for food or fun things to do when they report the books they’ve read. There are also a lot of free and fun activities at the library, all part of the Summer Reading Program.
Each year the program has a new theme, and to coincide with the Olympics, this year’s theme is “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!” Many of the events held at the library this summer involve keeping the body fit as well as the mind, such as Giant Games (large-scale versions of classic games), Teen Yoga and Hooping — and there’s plenty of fun left to be had! Here are a few of the exciting events coming up:
Teens: Live Action PAC-MAN: 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1 at NOPL @ Cicero. Play the part of a ghost, PAC-MAN or Ms. PAC-MAN in a life-size version of the classic game.
Bubbleman’s Bubble Games 2016: 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2 at NOPL @ North Syracuse. Participants will compete against each other to see who can make the biggest bubbles and will receive a special prize.
Puppet Show – Race to the Moon: 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4 at NOPL @ Brewerton. Join Roquefort and his friends as they flap, sail, and blast their way to the moon to save it from the hungry jaws of Grizzle, the cheese-gobbling rat!
Space is limited for these events, so we recommend registering in advance.
If you have children or grandchildren who haven’t signed up yet for the Summer Reading Program, doing so is easy: simply visit nopl.org/SRP and click on the appropriate age group at the NOPL location you use the most. Track what you read, and then stop by the library to get your prizes! Let’s make this the biggest summer for reading yet!
To sign up for events, visit nopl.org or call us at 676-7484 (Brewerton), 458-6184 (North Syracuse) or 699-2032 (Cicero).
