Joan Ann Grant Coughlin, 85, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 9, 2019. Prior to moving to Maryland in 2001, she had been a lifelong resident of Syracuse.
She was born on Feb. 23, 1934, the only child of Robert Andrew Grant and Eleanora Prell Grant. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Howard Thomas Coughlin. She is survived by her daughter, Eleanor (Ellie) Barna and son-in-law, David Barna, of Severn, MD, and grandson, Peter Barna of Elkridge, MD.
She was a 1952 graduate of North High School, and was employed for many years by Nationwide Insurance in Liverpool. In the 1980s and 1990s, Joan and Howard were active members of a ballroom dancing club, and completed over 100 Volksmarches in Onondaga and surrounding counties. In her later years, she enjoyed doing jigsaw and word puzzles, and was an avid supporter of animal rights all her life.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, P.A., 1 Second Ave., SW, Glen Burnie. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 13, in the chapel at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Crownsville. Interment will be at White Chapel Memory Gardens, Syracuse.
