Dana Avery Barnes III, age 78, went home to be with the Lord on June 1, 2019. Born April 22, 1941, to John Edwards Barnes and Elizabeth Rose Lambert in Syracuse, Dana “Tunk” was the youngest of four siblings including; John Barnes, Marylin Baysinger Thiebeau, and Suzanne Clark Swartzmiller. He was raised in Cazenovia.
Dana attended St. George’s Private School in Newport, RI, from 1956 through graduation in 1959. He served as Editor in Chief of the award-winning Lance yearbook, played football, basketball, swam and was captain of the baseball team. He received the St. George’s Medal at graduation which is awarded to the senior who best represents the character, athletics and scholarship of the school.
Dana married the love of his life, Caryl Adanti, also of Cazenovia. He worked as an electrician in Cazenovia before joining Western Electric Company in Syracuse. The family relocated to Kimesville, NC, in 1977. Dana retired from AT&T as a supervisor in network systems sales in 1989 after 28 years of service. He was an active member of Mt. Pleasant UMC where he served in several offices with the Methodist Men and taught Sunday school.
In 2007, he and Caryl moved to Sun City in Indian Land, SC. For 10 years he chaired what has become the “Dana Barnes” golf group. He developed and enjoyed deep friendships with many people in the community.
Dana enjoyed many things throughout his life including, family, golfing, camping adventures, laughing, working with Habitat and being a “Gentleman Farmer,” tending to cows and sheep on “The Farm” in Alamance County.
Dana is survived by his brother, John Barnes; three children, Doree E. Barnes (58), Gregory P. Barnes (55), Douglas A. Barnes (47) and six grandchildren, of whom he is very proud.
A “Celebration of Life” service for Dana will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on June 8 at the Sun City Carolina Lakes – Lake House in Indian Land, SC at 1353 Del Webb Blvd., Fort Mill, SC 29707.
