Barbara Audrey Gates of Skaneateles died peacefully on Feb. 28, 2018 . Barbara was born in Yonkers, N.Y., to the late Adeline Phillips and Edwin Bullock and grew up on Long Island, N.Y. Barbara loved the ocean and, in fact, she met her husband of 62 years, Donald Gates, at the beach. Don and Barb moved to Skaneateles in 1964, where they raised their four children. Barbara was an antique enthusiast and enjoyed travel. Barbara returned to school and earned her degree in nursing from Auburn Community College in May of 1976. She was employed at Community General Hospital from 1977 through 1986. Barbara was also active in the Second Baptist Church in Auburn and was employed in the church office for many years. She enjoyed Skaneateles and would never tire of the lake; however, Barbara and Don would frequently escape the harsh Central New York winters for respite on Singer Island, FL.
Barbara is survived by her husband Donald and their four children; Cindy, Eric, Dennis and Chris….as well as seven grandchildren; Lauren Carmeli, Jennifer, Christopher, Oliver, Samantha and Joe Gates and Talia Kenville.
Barbara was the loving sister of Ted and Jack Bullock, both predeceased, and she was also predeceased by Susan Sullivan Gates and Adam Carmeli her grandson.
All the Gates family are appreciative of the great care Barbara received at Iroquois Nursing Home.
Services were held at the Burrows Chapel in Lakeview Cemetery, Skaneateles. Arrangements by B.L. Bush & Sons Funeral Home, Camillus.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in Barbara’s memory to Iroquois Nursing Home or the Alzheimer’s Association, CNY Chapter.
