Sterling Sylvester Sanders, “Sandy” to his co-workers at Kodak and “Sterl”to others, died on Sept. 14, 2016, at the age of 94, after a brief illness.
Born to Henry and Margie Sanders of Hershey, PA., on Aug. 30, 1922, Sterling is survived by his wife of 70 years, Elizabeth, his younger sister, Gladys, his children David, Stephen, Susan, Linda, Laurie and his grandchildren. Preceding him in death was his son Casey.
Sterling served in India during WW II. After the war he moved with his new wife to Rochester, where he spent his professional life working as a chemist at Kodak and taught chemistry as an evening instructor at the Rochester Institute of Technology. His love of the outdoors was passed on to his children through yearly camping trips. Shortly before retiring he moved to Kendall, N.Y., where he had space to farm and a small plot to raise bees. He later moved with Liz to Cazenovia to be closer to their youngest daughter. He was bicycling, canoeing, kayaking, cross-country skiing and out on the golf course through much of his eighties. He will be remembered for his honesty and utmost devotion to his wife and family, who will miss him greatly.
