The public library is one of the most beloved and useful resources in our community. Even in today’s world, where so much information is right at our fingertips, libraries perform a critical function. They’re places where students can research; job seekers can find information and community members can gather. In recognition of National Library Week (April 9 to 15), I urge everyone to take advantage of their local library, appreciate all it offers and thank library staff for their commitment to helping us learn and explore new worlds.
From school libraries to public libraries, we need these vital institutions and the people who work at them more than ever. In honor of these committed professionals, Tuesday, April 11, is dedicated to thanking library staff for all they do in our communities. On Wednesday, April 12, we recognize the work of dedicated bookmobiles, which help reach neighbors who may not be able to get to a local library.
Onondaga County offers a robust public library system where you can visit a local branch to borrow books, book a meeting space, use technology and printing services, participate in reading programs, research family history, access career development tools, check out films and audio materials and even obtain tax assistance. Local libraries also offer classes in coding, the arts, writing, science and technology, languages and professional resources. Some even offer seeds for planting and 3-D printing.
Join me during National Library Week in visiting your local library and exploring all they have to offer. Young or old, everyone can benefit from the library.
