The Baldwinsville Central School District Board of Education recently appointed Christy Pavetto Bond to finish out former BOE member Burrill Wells’ term. Wells resigned in September, and Bond will serve the remainder of the school year.
Bond has lived in Baldwinsville on and off for much of her life, most recently moving back to the area eight years ago. She is a healthcare administrator at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center and the national operations director for a total joint replacement research study led by the University of Massachusetts.
She has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in education, both from SUNY Oswego. As a child, she attended St. Mary’s Academy in Baldwinsville. Her younger son is a student at Durgee Junior High School.
“Education has always been a passion for me. It’s something I care a great deal about,” Bond said. “I have a very special place in my heart for special education. I’m hoping to be able to support and strengthen that aspect.”
Bond said her 27 years of experience in the health care business helps her understand some of the business challenges facing the school district.
“My biggest goal is to contribute my business experience any way I can,” she said. “Having the health care background, I know many of the significant decisions the board makes relate to the well-being of the faculty and staff.”
With public education in a state of flux, Bond said she hopes she can offer perspective about weathering changes. She likened schools’ current situation to changes in accountability for patient outcomes in the health care world.
“I think education is going through a period of pretty radical and pretty progressive change with the Common Core and public reporting of outcomes,” Bond said. “It reminds me of what we went through in health care several years ago… I think there are a lot of parallels.”
Bond’s short term on the school board isn’t her first foray into community leadership. Previously, she served on the LaFayette After School Program board. She also spent seven years on the board of Make-A-Wish Central New York, where she held the positions of board chair, board secretary and chair of the human resource committee. A 1999 graduate of Leadership Greater Syracuse, Bond served on the LGS board and co-chaired its youth leadership program.
“We worked with students from all of the school districts in Onondaga County and developed a leadership program to encourage students to become active leaders in their communities,” she said.
Bond’s term expires June 30. She said she plans to run for election in the spring.
“I would love to be able to continue,” she said.
