A Chittenango police officer thwarted a bank robbery on Tuesday, Sept. 6, after observing a female “acting suspiciously” before entering the Community Bank on Genesee Street.
According to police, Officer William Hohl took a position where he was able to observe the building after seeing the woman, who was dressed from head to toe in black, enter the bank. Moments later, the woman, identified as Michayla Schutt, exit the bank and headed across the street to the Dollar General store.
Still suspicious and unsure of the situation, Hohl continued his observation. As Schutt attempted to enter her vehicle, which was parked behind Dollar General, she noticed Hohl watching and went into Dollar General, where she attempted to remove the clothing she was wearing during the alleged bank robbery, according to police. She was taken into custody without incident, police said.
Further investigation revealed that Schutt had passed a note to the Community Bank teller demanding money.
“The officer who observed the woman go in the bank did a fantastic job noticing her and then standing by; he just everything right, did a great job,” said Chittenango Police Chief Fred Corey.
Chittenango police were assisted by New York State Police, Madison County Sheriff’s Department, Canastota Police and New York State Park Police.
