Don and Kathy Barone recently traveled to Orlando, Fla., with their 145-pound three-year-old Great Dane, Izzy, and returned to Cazenovia with two first-place awards from the 2011 American Kennel Club Eukanuba National Championship.
The Barones, who own and operate De Beau Danes from their home on Lincklaen Road, received first place ribbons for Best in Breed and Best Bred By Exhibitioner for “Working Group” canines, on Dec. 17 and 18.
“We were totally shocked. This is a really big show,” Don said. “The competition was from all over the country, from as far as California and Washington. There were many of what I call ‘heavy-hitters’ at this show, we beat out the number one Great Dane in the country. We’re very proud.”
Izzy beat out 26 other Great Danes to claim the title. During the competition, the dogs are first displayed for judges, as they trot around the arena. Officials then closely evaluate each canines’ teeth, form and muscles, examining them for inconsistencies. Kathy is Izzy’s handler as well as owner, a role not many choose to undertake at national competitions.
The show in Orlando was invitation-only, as solely champion and grand-champion canines were allowed to compete. Izzy is considered a grand champion, after attaining a minimum of 25 points – which aren’t easy to come by.
Champion dogs are those that have been awarded at least 15 points in their show career.
The entire competition was simulcast online for dog-show enthusiasts and will be broadcast on national television in mid-January.
The Barones received a monetary award for their success, along with a large floral arrangement to commemorate the win.
While Don said it is always nice to be rewarded for hard work, the prize money usually goes back into the couple’s dog show and travel funds.
After having Izzy crowned as the Best in Breed and Best Bred by Exhibitioner, the Barones decided to quit while she is ahead, and officially retire her. Izzy will now be bred; the first customer will the second-place finisher at nationals, the former title holder.
Originally from Buffalo, the Barones moved to Cazenovia 13 years ago. They currently own five Great Danes and operate De Beau Danes. They specialize in breeding and have sent puppies to buyers across the country.
