The Fairmount Community Library, located at 406 Chapel Drive is packaging new ways to introduce literacy to children and families. New take-home Storytime Backpacks for toddlers, and new Welcome Kits for families with newborns are just a few of the ways to help foster the love of literacy in infants and children.
Take-home Storytime Backpacks are geared towards preschool aged children who are not yet in school. Each backpack contains books, educational toys, musical components, and printable instructions for parents on how to best use the items at home. Ideas include rhymes, finger play, and songs to use with musical instruments parents can incorporate into their daily routine. Backpacks have varying themes such as Amazing Alphabet, Things that Go, and Digging Up Dinosaurs. Each pack contains early literacy lessons with fun and engaging activities for children and parents.
The library is also promoting a Welcome Kit for newborns in our community. Patrons are encouraged to fill out a card at the library with the name and address of a family who has a newborn. The library will then prepare a Welcome Kit for the newborn which includes a welcome letter, baby board book, baby sensory toy, stuffed animal, and milestone cards for parents. All of this is in an effort to support the importance of literacy at an early age and to welcome new parents to the library. Funding for these kits and the new backpacks is made possible through the 2019-2022 New York State Library Family Literacy Library Services Program.
The Fairmount Community Library offers programs such as weekly Storytimes for children, and a new monthly Baby Circle for parents of babies 0-9 months. The monthly Baby Circle program will be one Saturday a month at 10 a.m. and is a great opportunity for socialization. Library staff will also introduce activities, baby books, and resources for families of new infants as well as ideas for engaging infants at home.
The Fairmount Community Library’s mission is to connect our community through information sharing, fostering communication and enhancing lifelong learning. For more information on our programs and resources, visit the FCL website at fairmountlibrary.org.
