West Genesee announces new superintendent
The West Genesee Board of Education has selected David C. Bills to be their next Superintendent of Schools. Bills will be appointed at the June 19 board of education meeting.
“We are beyond thrilled to welcome David to our West Genesee family,” Board of Education President Roberta Herron said. “Along with his experience in education and leadership, Bills brings a core belief in the continuous improvement and support for students in all areas of learning.”
Interim Superintendent Michael Schiedo extended hi congratulations as well.
“I would like to congratulate Mr. David Bills on being selected as West Genesee Central School District’s new superintendent,” he said.
The search was a months long process involving many varied parties weighing in on candidates and working throughout the search process.
“During this extensive selection process, the board set out to work with many different stakeholder groups, value their feedback, and find the most qualified individual to move our district forward,” Herron said. “His background, communication style, commitment to students and a personality that is both self-effacing and humorous makes him the perfect choice to lead our District into its next chapter.”
Bills joins West Genesee with over 30 years of educational experience. Twenty-three of those years in a leadership role. He has been the sitting superintendent in Honeoye Central School District for the past 11 years and an active community member.
Prior to becoming superintendent, Bills worked as a building principal in two Rochester-area districts, including nine years in K-3 buildings in the West Irondequoit Central School District and two years as an elementary principal in the Wayne Central School District.
Before working for Wayne Central Schools, Bills taught instrumental music for 11 years at Victor High School, also outside Rochester, then spent a year working as an assistant principal for Victor Intermediate School.
Bills’ educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in music education from SUNY Fredonia and a master’s degree in educational administration from SUNY Brockport. He also received his school administrator and supervisor certification, his school district administrator certification, and his certificate of advanced study from SUNY Brockport. He attended the superintendent development program at SUNY Oswego.
In his letter to the West Genesee Board of Education, Bills described being a Syracuse native with first-hand knowledge of the high-achieving nature of the West Genesee Central School District. The District’s state and national recognitions and other “strong accolades come from success in classrooms, performance on stage and fields, and in many actions as ambassadors of the community,” he said.
In addition to leading a similarly high-achieving district in Honeoye, Bills said the opportunity to “return to Central New York to give back to the region of my youth would be an additional rewarding layer of service.”
A CNY native, Bills and his wife Julie are looking forward to relocating back to the region and living in the West Genesee Central School District.
“It is with great anticipation and excitement that I return to Central New York and my roots in the Syracuse area,” Bills said. “Even more, it is my great honor to join the West Genesee community. The commitment to excellence is unequaled and has been the focus of every conversation in recent months with students, staff, parents, and community members.”
Bills went on to say he is excited about this opportunity and he is looking forward to getting to know the people, students and West Genesee community.
“Positive experiences often come from opportunity provided and the support of others,” Bills said. “I am grateful for mentors and role models that have inspired me. It will be my great pleasure to serve our community as superintendent of schools. Please join me in our commitment to our youth today as they approach their tomorrow. I look forward to meeting you and working together in this journey.”
Bills will begin at West Genesee Central School District on Sept. 1, 2019.
