Eagle staff report
A Little Free Library was installed in Nelson last Friday, Dec. 14, in front of Nelson Farms Country Store on Route 20. The “Take a Book; Leave a Book” approach encourages advanced literacy, learning, and enjoyment with the ready availability of books of many genres for readers of all ages.
The library was proposed by Nelson Town Councilor Tammy Hayes as part of the town’s streetscape improvement project. Steve Burrell, funded by Cazenovia Rotary, had built several Little Free Library boxes which were stored in the Cazenovia Library Barn. Cazenovia Boy Scout Troop 18 members moved the library boxes to the scout lodge where one was repainted at the request of Sammi Clark-Collins, Associate Director of Nelson Farms, who offered the sheltered location on the front porch.
Once the Little Library was mounted on its legs by BSA Troop 18 Scoutmaster George Schmit, it was filled with books provided by Hayes and Betsy Kennedy, Director of the Cazenovia Public Library. Janice Parker will be the Little Free Library’s steward, insuring that a ready supply of books will be available.
Nelson’s Little Free Library joins the growing locations where books are available, including CazCans, Caz Laundry, Kinney Drug Store, Lakeland Park, and Lakeside Park.
The Country Grocery Store in New Woodstock is next to receive a Little Free Library from Troop 18.
