The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating an early morning structure fire in the Town of Onondaga.
At approximately 7:13 am this morning, Sheriff’s Deputies along with firefighters from the Onondaga Hill Department and surrounding districts, responded to a reported apartment fire at 4898 Grolier Road. A bus driver from the West Hill School District alerted the school’s dispatch after observing heavy smoke coming from the eight unit apartment building.
As deputies arrived, the heavy smoke could be seen billowing out the front door as the occupants were evacuating the apartment. Deputies assisted the occupants, an adult male and female along with a 9 month old baby, to a safe location away from the apartment as firefighters arrived on scene. Firefighters quickly entered into the apartment where they discovered an active bedroom fire.
It took firefighter approximately 20 minutes to get the fire under control and extinguished. Deputies interviewed the occupants of the apartment, who indicated that they had turned on a space heater a few hours prior to discovering the fire. No injuries were reported however, as a precaution, the baby was medically evaluated by EMS personnel on scene.
The American Red Cross was called to the scene and is currently working on relocating the residents.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently being conducted by the Onondaga County Fire Investigation Unit.
