Many seniors and others in need in the northern suburbs rely on North Area Meals on Wheels for their daily nutrition and social interaction, but what happens when the weather gets in the way?
“There will be days when we will be forced to close North Area Meals on Wheels and there are clients that will not have any food,” said NAMOW Program Director Jennifer Covert. “We want to provide ‘blizzard packs’ to all of our clients so that they will never go hungry.”
Through Oct. 31, NAMOW is collecting non-perishable food items to distribute to their clients before the snow falls. The organization’s goal is to assemble 800 blizzard packs by Halloween.
“Whether it be sharing with your company, church, family, or friends; we will take all of the help we can get,” Covert said.
Covert said NAMOW can pick up donations if needed, and people may make monetary donations.
The following is a list of the specific items that we need to collect. Please make sure that they are single-serving size, and that the expiration date is past the winter months:
- Tuna salad (3 oz., pop-top lid)
- Chicken salad (3 oz., pop-top lid)
- Lipton soup packets (low sodium)
- Oatmeal packets
- 16 oz. bottled water
- Wheat crackers
- Envelopes of nonfat dry milk
- Juice boxes
- Fruit cups (low sugar)
- Granola bars (low sugar)
- Applesauce
- Raisins
