CROP Walk fast approaching
By Rev. Joellyn Tuttle
CROP Walk Coordinator
The Skaneateles CROP Walk has a new site for their 2016 Walk. On Sunday, October 23 walkers and the community are invited to Austin Pavilion to take part in some activities, fun learning activities, watch short video presentations and to walk fight hunger in our own community and around the world.
CROP Walks have been raising funds for global and local efforts to alleviate hunger since 1970. After 31 years of CROP walks in the Skaneateles Area, we have a new venue so walkers can participate in interactive displays highlighting the work of CROP and its parent agency Church World Service (CWS).
At 12:30 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 23, walkers are invite to register while hearing the stories of persons who have benefitted from the support CROP provides. At 1 pm, walkers can choose the “indoor route” in the arena where they can participate in some challenges and interactive stations. For those who prefer to walk outdoors, we will walk up the hill to the walking path around the tennis courts in Austin Park.
Our new Drink Water/Give Water station will be the collection point for water bottles that were distributed in the community at the Labor Day parade and in village congregations, encouraging people to enjoy the water, but then drop a dime into the empty bottle every time they drank a glass or bottle of water. The lack of access to clean water is an ongoing threat to the health of people around the world. CWS works to dig wells and provide clean water sources to villages around the world. The dime-filled water bottles can be turned in at our site at the Austin pavilion anytime between 12:30 – 2:00 pm that day; or to Skaneateles United Methodist Church any time before October 31 weekdays between 9 to 1 p.m.. (685-5963)
The CROP Activities are open all members of the community. Walkers with sponsor envelopes are reminded to turn in their envelopes at registration. Twenty five percent of the funds raised at our Skan CROP Walk 2016 remain in our community supporting the Skaneateles Ecumenical Food Pantry and the Spafford Food Pantry. Persons wishing to donate online to our community CROP Walk can go to: crophungerwalk.org, select “donate” on the menu bar, and donate to: SkanCROP2016.
