By the time all the things were settled from the quartet of Section III girls tennis singles and doubles tournaments that took place on Wednesday and Thursday, a host of local players had earned berths in next week’s sectional state qualifier at Drumlins.
And no one enjoyed the week more than Manlius-Pebble Hill, who swept the Division IV singles and doubles titles in that tournament held at Utica’s Mott Courts.
In singles, Grace Del Pino, given the top seed, advanced the qualifier with her 6-0, 6-2 quarterfinal win over Westmoreland’s Bailey Hyrb. But Del Pino didn’t stop there, routing Hyrb’s teammate, Alyssa Bowers, 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals before a title match where Utica-Notre Dame’s Ellen Lyga pushed Del Pino to a pair of tie-breakers, but couldn’t topple the MPH star, who won, 7-6, 7-6.
Also, MPH’s top-seeded doubles team of Sophie Novak and Anna Szombathy did not drop a set in either of their first two matches against Julia Smiegal-Kylie Trunfio (Clinton, 6-2, 6-2) and Sabrina Christensen-Natasha Smith (Westmoreland, 6-0, 6-0) to reach the semifinals.
Against another Clinton duo, Sydney Pavlik and Carly Sinclair, Novak and Szompathy earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory, setting up a final with Westmoreland’s Kia Barber and Olivia Merrell where, in straight sets, Novak and Szombathy took the sectional division championship in another 6-4, 6-1 decision.
Class A team champion Fayetteville-Manlius qualified two singles players, Katerina Atallah and Maggie Bonomo. Neither of them lost a set in the Division I tournament at Syracuse University’s Skytop Courts until meeting each other in the semifinals.
In a tough three-set battle, Bonomo rallied from behind to beat Atallah 4-6, 7-6, 6-2, but Bonomo’s “reward” was a final against Baldwinsville’s Kahlei Reisinger, who again proved far too tough, prevailing 6-1, 6-1 to remain the overwhelming favorite for the state qualifier.
Moving to Division I doubles, F-M’s Kristina Liu and Shirley Zhang made it through two rounds, edging Lauren Dusse and Taylor Slink (Baldwinsville) 6-3, 6-4 in the pivotal quarterfinal match before a 6-1, 6-1 semifinal defeat to Auburn’s Lauryn Husby and Julia Wagner, who had already beaten Mary Trop and Abby Welker 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Madison Jordan and Olivia Wojnovich lost in the opening round as Husby and Wagner went on to claim the sectional title.
Over at Utica’s Mott Courts, Christian Brothers Academy singles player Mikayla Santulli reached the state qualifier with a series of wins, topping Eliza Johnson (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) 6-2, 6-3 and Krysta Stupp (General Brown) 6-1, 6-1 before a 7-6, 6-1 quarterfinal victory over Cazenovia’s Alex Galle allowed her to advance.
In the semifinals, Santulli went up against Chittenango’s Kelly Gloo and kept up her hot play, defeating Gloo in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Only the top seed, Marcellus’ Haley Randall, stopped Santulli, who took a 6-0, 6-2 defeat to Randall in the finals.
Meanwhile, Allison Croucher, after a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Chittenango’s Allison Croucher, met Allison Krause (Skaneateles) in the quarterfinals, gaining an early lead, but falling one set short of the qualifier as Krause rallied to beat her 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.. In doubles, all three of CBA’s teams – Rhea Saini-Rati Saini, Hannah Kang-Raquel Santoro and Sloane Nicoletti-Watson-Karen Simone – lost in the round of 16.
Also playing at Skytop, Jamesville-DeWitt was in the Division II tournament, and made an impact of its own.
In doubles, Jungyun Kim and Maya Pollock earned a berth in the state qualifying meet with their 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Mexico’s Breana Delong and Kennedy Myers, and then won a 6-3, 6-1 decision over New Hartford’s Katie Faroukh and Morgan Joyce before falling, 6-2, 6-0, to Oneida’s Jillian Brodock and Brianna Lauretti in the finals.
The Red Rams’ duo of Kim and Mai Driesen lost in the opening round, as did Diamond Cole and Katie Tzizanis. In singles play, Maggie Mannion fell, 6-4, 6-2, to Whitesboro’s Tori Pelligrino, with Julia Skeval falling to another Whitesboro player, Nicole Duegaw, 7-5, 6-4, and Natalie Alweis taking a 7-6, 6-2 defeat to Indian River’s Erin O’Brien.
