Through eight games, the Skaneateles girls ice hockey team still hasn’t lost in regulation.
n its return to Austin Park Pavilion last Friday night, the Lakers held three different leads against visiting Beekmantown, but could not hold on to any of them, settling for a 3-3 tie with Eagles.
Having played some memorable post-season games with Beekmantown in recent years, Skaneateles was eager to face them again, and the battle didn’t prove disappointing.
For much of the game, it stayed 0-0, the Lakers getting a series of early opportunities, but not capitalizing on any of them.
Then, with five minutes left in the second period, Skaneateles finally converted on a power play, Claire Michel tipping in the puck after passes from Abby Kuhns and Sophie Kush.
Quickly, the Eagles tied it, 1-1, but 30 seconds later the Lakers were back in front, again with Michel scoring, this time on a rebound, with Lauren Jones and Caroline McGuigan earning the assists.
Moving to the third period, Beekmantown again pulled even, 2-2, only to have the Lakers again claim the lead, Grace Schnorr earning the go-ahead goal.
With a chance to put the game away late in the third period, Skaneateles gave up the puck, and the Eagles converted it into a breakaway short-handed goal. That third comeback would hold up, as neither side was able to score in overtime.
Skaneateles met Plattsburgh a day later, and this game carried none of the suspense of the previous night’s game, the Lakers recording a 4-0 shutout.
Getting at least one goal in each period, Skaneateles saw Paige Postalwait score twice, with Michel assisting on those goals and adding one of her own. Kuhns had the other goal as Mallorie Kovacs, Allison Weiss and Megan Teachout each had one assist.
With little time to rest, Skaneateles visits Ithaca on Monday night, and then returns to Austin Park Pavilion Wednesday to face Oswego.
