For the second time in two weeks, the Liverpool boys cross country team got a close-up look at Fayetteville-Manlius, all of it part of Tuesday’s CNY Counties League Jubilee at Baldwinsville.
What the state Class A no. 2-ranked Warriors found out was that it brought out the best from the top-ranked Hornets, who not only prevailed in the team standings, but did so with a speed rating that was the best in the United States this fall.
Even with Ben Petrella blazing to a time of 15 minutes, 19.3 seconds and Connor Buck finishing in 15:19.6, the Warriors ceded the top four spots to the Hornets, who saw Bryce Millar (14:42.3) edge Peter Ryan (14:42.5) for the title and set a Baldwinsville course record.
Still, the Warriors, with 44 points to F-M’s 17 points, finished well clear of third-place West Genesee (117 points), as Petrella and Buck were followed by Dan Muldoon, who took ninth place in 15:33.9, and Dylan McCarthy, who was 10th in 15:40 flat.
Nick LeClair earned 14th place in 16:04.7, half a second ahead of Ryan Comstock (16:05.2) in 15th place. Ty Brownlow was 17th in 16:07 flat, ahead of Jacob Rowell in 25th place (16:28.7) and Stevie Schulz, who was 31st in 16:07.9.
Cicero-North Syracuse finished fifth, with 135 points, led by Andrew Bearkland, who was 16th in a clocking of 16:05.9. Chris Hannan, in 16:31.3, was 29th, just ahead of Jared George (16:46.2) in 32nd place, with Joe Tricarico 36th (16:56.4) and Jake Dehm 42nd in 17:20.9.
Liverpool also beat C-NS in the girls CNYCL race, where with 82 points the Warriors were third and the Northstars (107 points) took fifth, each of them trailing F-M (17 points) and West Genesee (74 points).
Juliana Basla set the pace for the Warriors, making her way to 13th place in 18:56.5, with Maia Henry (19:04.6) beating out Morgan Chewning-Kulick (19:07.3) in 16th place. Jilliann Stagnitta was 22nd, in 20:03.9, with Abby McNamara getting to 24th place in 20:08.2. Kristina Moore (21:04.3), Vanessa Eberhard (21:17.1) and Emily Butler (21:20.1) were further back.
As for C-NS, the best finish went to Taylor Parry, who made her way to 15th place in 19:00.1, three spots ahead of Jilliann Norris (19:14.7) in 18th place. Madison Gross finished 26th in 20:14 flat, ahead of a group of Northstars that included Annina Marullo (20:16.3), Megan Trubia (20:50.5), Lexi Pirro (20:50.8) and Mia Pestle (20:56.4).
