From a collective standpoint, the Skaneateles girls swim team may have struggled against a pair of powerful opponents, but it still made plenty of individual impact.
The Lakers’ busy week began last Tuesday night, when it ventured to Jamesville-DeWitt and took a 98-80 defeat to the Red Rams, despite Leah King’s big effort.
During the 100-yard butterfly, King tore to a time of 1:04 flat, which set a school record for that event and was enough to beat J-D’s Hayley Schultz, who was second in 1:04.9.
Earlier in the meet, Rachel Teixeira dueled with the Red Rams’ Marissa Potamianos in the 200 freestyle, and in a time of 2:07.3 edged Potamianos (2:07.5) for the top spot.
Teixeira also was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:10.2, trailing Sophia Farchione (1:05.8), and went on to help Leah King, Halle King and Haley Buchholz claim first place in the 400 freestyle relay in a clocking of 4:00.6. Amid J-D’s deep lineup, Alden Coyne won twice, claiming the 50 freestyle in 25.2 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 55.7 seconds.
Back home at the Community Center pool on Friday night, the Lakers took on Liverpool, and the depth and quality of the Warriors proved too much, though Skaneateles did have some fine moments in a 104-80 defeat.
To start with, the Lakers won the 200 medley relay, seeing Buchholz, Taylor Hill, Rose Keady and Kaleigh Nicholson put up a time of 2:16.03. There was also a 1-2 finish in the 500 freestyle, where Teixeira, in 5:47.03, won and Colleen Ferguson took second place in 5:53.48.
Individually, Buchholz was second (1:08.74) to Liverpool’s Olivia Corlett (1:07.53) in a hard-fought 100 backstroke. Teixeira, in 2:28.27, was runner-up to Sydnie Sovinsky (2:19.52) in the 200 IM.
Halle King, in the 200 freestyle, swam to a time of 2:14.29, where the Warriors’ Julia Telesca prevailed in 2:11.36. Leah King swam the 100 butterfly in 1:05.58, where again Sovinsky (1:01.52) would finish on top.
Two more meets follow this week in a 48-hour span, with Skaneateles meeting the combined Syracuse city squad on Tuesday before a Thursday-night home battle with Holland Patent.
