The Marcellus girls soccer team was just 1-1-1 going into last Monday night’s game at Oswego, but got to unleash its attack in the course of a 5-1 victory over the Buccaneers.
As it sprinted out to a 3-0 halftime edge, the Mustangs turned to Madi Belvito, who constantly flew past Oswego’s defenders and took advantage of her open looks, earning a three-goal hat trick and adding an assist. Keelin Kelly and Bri Sammon each had one goal and one assist, while Molly Tice also gained an assist.
This carried over into Thursday night’s 6-0 shutout over Cortland, though it took a while for the Mustangs to gain control, only getting a goal from Shannon White, assisted by Jade Sargeant, in the first half before overwhelming the Purple Tigers with force in the late going.
Belvito scored twice in a 10-minute span during the second half, adding an assist. Tice, Kelly and Jackie Madden also found the net, with Liz White joining Belvito and Tice in the assist column. Marcellus out-shot Cortland by an 18-1 margin.
Solvay was in trouble during last Monday’s trip to Hannibal, but a big second-half surge allowed the Bearcats to edge past the Warriors 4-3.
Trailing 2-0 at the break, the Bearcats woke up behind the work of Chelsie Delperuto, who managed three assists, and Nicole Antonacci, who scored twice. Katie Harrington and Christina Marotti had the other goals as Samantha Waters finished with 13 saves.
In Thursday’s game at Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, the Bearcats won by that same 4-3 margin, this time playing the Rebels to a 2-2 halftime draw and, once again, finishing strong.
This time around, Delperuto was the finisher, picking up a three-goal hat trick as Antonacci earned the other goal and Waters needed each of her 15 saves to overcome the work of APW star Kylie Bartlett, who scored twice.
Playing in the opening round of the Chittenango Tournament on Saturday, the Bearcats edged Central Square 2-1, which meant a Sunday game against the host Bears, which ended in a 5-3 defeat.
Down 1-0 at halftime, Solvay, with two goals from Makenzie Lee and another tally from Antonacci, tried to make its way back, but Chittenango kept converting, too, as Lauren Billington led the Bears with a three-goal hat trick.
Jordan-Elbridge, in its own game with APW, was overwhelmed in last Tuesday’s 8-0 defeat, a match that included DeShae Jones scoring four goals for the Rebels, overcoming an eight-save effort by Eagles goalie Leah Wright.
Bishop Ludden put a scare into OHSL Patriot division leader Bishop Grimes on Friday afternoon, but took a 2-1 defeat to the Cobras.
Kennedy Yearby had scored in the first half to put Grimes in front, 1-0. It stayed that way until the midway point of the second half, where Kellie Byrne, taking a pass from Morgan Beamish, poked a shot past Cobras goalie Carli Buccina.
Suddenly, it was a 1-1 game, but just before Ludden could get it to overtime, Grimes’ Toni Laneve put a shot past Kara Beamish with 6:30 to play, and that go-ahead goal held up. Beamish, in defeat, finished with eight saves.
