A little more than just a competitive round of golf was on the mind of Jamesville-DeWitt’s Molly Hair when the Red Rams faced Westhill on Thursday afternoon at Butternut Creek.
After the match, Hair signed her college letter of intent to attend Fairfield University in Connecicut, where she is expected to play golf in the NCAA Division I ranks as part of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
By signing, Hair is believed to be the second J-D girls golfer to attend a Division I school, following Suzy Whaley, who famously qualified for a PGA Tour event in 2003– ironically, in Hartford, Connecticut, not far from where Hair will go to college.
A two-sport athlete, Hair has stood out in golf and swimming at J-D, earning 10 varsity letters. She has qualified for the state tournament twice in both sports, tying for 28th in last June’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association golf championship at SUNY-Delhi.
As a part of five Section III championship teams in golf and three in swimming, Hair broke two school records in golf, and her times in the pool set four more school marks – two in individual events (100-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke), two in relays. She earned nine all-league and five all-section honors along the way.
Half a dozen schools were recruiting Hair, including Niagara, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and Merrimack, with Merrimack trying to get Hair for both sports.
Hair said that, while she enjoyed her visits to other school, she felt instantly at home when visiting Fairfield. She added that, while still playing golf, she will not swim competitively at Fairfield.
