Two weeks, two appearances for the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team – and two very convincing victories on the ledger.
The Lakers simply pulled away from everyone in Thursday night’s John DiMao Memorial Invitational at Colgate University’s Sanford Field House. Earning 168 points, Cazenovia had more than double the total of runner-up Rome Free Academy, who got 64 points.
Unlike the first Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association meet six days earlier, individuals could earn points, which gave Cazenovia ample opportunity to stack up its stars and outclass everyone.
Many of those points came from Jeanette Cudney, who won twice. In the 1,500-meter run, Cudney won the race in a time of five minutes, 15.23 seconds, with Meredith Shephard fourth (5:41.90) and Mya Walters (5:44.23) taking sixth place.
As a follow-up, in the 1,000-meter run, Cudney prevailed in 3:18.80, with Colleen Stalder taking third place in 3:23.87 and Maureen Milmoe (3:35.43) in fifth place.
In the 4×200 relay, Clare Costello, Isabella Quattrone, Olivia McEntee and Sarah Willard prevailed in 1:53.80, with Oriskany (1:57.17) the runner-up. Then, on her own, Costello won the 55-meter dash, edging Central Valley Academy’s Liz Belfast, 7.73 seconds to Belfast’s 7.76.
Cazenovia swept all three relay events that were scored. Willard, Julia Raleigh, Samantha Gates and Keeley Race needed 4:41.43 to hold off Clinton (4:46.71) and win the 4×400, while Grace Wheeler, Megan Henderson, Grace Milmoe and Hannah Light-Olson got first place in the 4×800 in 10:46.48, with New Hartford (10:53.44) taking second place.
Ashley Kent earned her victory in the triple jump, going 33 feet 2 inches, easily outlasting Clinton’s Alayna Lofgren (32’5 ½”) for the title, and Kent got to second place in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.66 seconds, while Delaney Yates (10.34 seconds) got fifth place.
Liz Pittman, fifth to Kent in the triple jump (30’11”), was victorious in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet with fewer misses than West Canada Valley’s Abigail Esty, with Tori Fischer fourth (6’6”) and Glenna Kahalan fifth. Pittman also went 15’1”, to finish third in the long jump, while Fischer tied for fifth in the high jump.
Milmoe was second in the 600-meter run in 1:50.91, with Gates (1:51.76) and Henderson (1:51.93) third and fourth, respectively. Sarah Haley earned third place in the shot put, heaving it 26 feet 2 ½ inches, while Hannah Dain was fourth (26’3”) in the weight throw.
Cazenovia’s boys indoor track team had a more modest total of 20.5 points in its portion of the DiMao meet, finishing sixth out of 13 sides. Chittenango (18.5 points) tied Central Valley for seventh as Rome Free Academy won with 137.5 points.
Most of the Lakers’ points came in the 4×200 relay, where Cole Willard, Ryan O’Herien, Will Fellows and Alex Devine were second in 1:40.49, behind RFA’s winning time of 1:33.92.
O’Herien would add a fifth-place finish in the weight throw, heaving it 35’8”, while Willard cleared 5’2” and was fourth in the high jump, ahead of teammate Eli LaGorga, who tied for fifth.
Sean Satchwell ran to fifth place in the mile in 4:56.01. Reed Lucas and Sawyer Hunt were seventh and eighth, respectively, in the shot put, just missing out on points. Lucas also was eighth in the weight throwas Teo Lang went 17’1 ¼” for sixth place in the long jump and Casey Fenton was seventh in the triple jump.
For Chittenango, Isaac Czarnecki gained third place in the 600 in 1:34 flat, while teammate Mike Capeling was seventh. Czarnecki added a fourth-place clocking of 2:51.82 in the 1,000 as he, Capeling, Ben Seale and Kenny Galbraith took third in the 4×800 in 9:27.20. The Bears got to fifth (4:08.78), ahead of sixth-place Cazenovia (4:09.85), in the 4×400.
