Though they both got close to the top, each of the Fayetteville-Manlius indoor track and field teams could not quite earn victories during Friday’s Oscar B. Jensen Holiday Relays at SRC Arena.
The girls Hornets were especially close, picking up 50 points, just behind Liverpool, who held on to the top spot by earning 52 points. Jamesville-DeWitt also was strong, working to fourth place with 39.83 points.
As expected, F-M ruled in distance races. Katie Brislin won the mile in 5:16.06 and teamed with Annika Avery for the top team time of 10:38.51 as J-D’s Rachel Fairbanks (third overall) and Kim Walsh settled into fourth place in 11:47.37.
Alana Pearl, in the 3,000-meter run, beat the field in 10:23.83, and Jillian Fanning was third, so F-M’s combined total of 21:03.07 was more than a minute ahead of the field, with J-D in sixth place.
Michelle Duffy and Jenna Farrell were victorious in the 1,000-meter run in a combined 6:30.80, where East Syracuse-Minoa’s Natalie Marra and Juliette Miller were second in 6:32.08 and J-D (6:51.74) was fourth behind Laura Wengert and Samantha Clemons.
F-M even prevailed in a field event, Anna Castro and Christabel Ezidiegwu clearing 9 feet 6 inches in the high jump to finish one inch better than runner-up Corcoran. J-D’s McKeznie Kallquist and Toria Carter tied for fourth. Castro and Caitlin Ferro gave the Hornets a third-place effort (20.41 seconds) in the 55 hurdles.
J-D finally went to the top in the long jump, where Sierra Vasiliou had the top individual leap of 16’ 5” and Patrece Martin was fourth, leading to a combined 31’ 7”, more than three feet clear of the field.
Martin earned her own title in the triple jump, going 34’ 7 ¼” to beat Cicero-North Syracuse’s Jade Jenkins (33’ 3 ½”) by a comfortable margin. Vasiliou and Ally Fox got close to a J-D victory in the 55-meter dash, getting second (15.52 seconds) to Mexico (15.48 seconds).
Fox and Casey Keane put J-D in third place in the 300-meter dash in 1:32.18, with Anna Perrotti and Marri Ryu (1:32.28) inches behind for the Hornets in fourth place. Salwa El-Hindi and Brooke DeRoberts were fifth in the shot put, throwing it 55’ 6 ½”.
F-M’s boys indoor track team had 54 points, which also put them in second place as Baldwinsville, with 62 points, won for the second time in as many weeks.
Again, Nick Ryan had a big day, winning the individual mile in 4:24.88 to edge Mexico’s James Gowans (4:25.37) as he and Connor Farrell finished second (9:20.87) to Auburn (9:15.79) among the teams.
Bryce Millar, in the 3,200-meter run, beat the field in 9:50.91, the only sub-10 minute effort, with Riley Hughes fifth as the pair got 20:12.51, well clear of Fulton (20:56.93) and the chasing pack.
Colin Fitzgibbons prevailed in the 1,000 in 2:39 flat, but did get a team title as he and Andrew Berger finished in 5:29.22, just ahead of Jordan-Elbridge (5:31.10) and the field.
Kyle Barber, teaming with Kyle Harbour, won the 55 hurdles, finishing in a total of 17.87 seconds as C-NS (18.24 seconds) settled for second place.
Barber and Charlie Beeler nearly won the 400 sprint, Beeler second among individuals as the Hornets’ time of 1:48.77 topped everyone except B’ville (1:46.41), with J-D sixth. Zhengyue Zhu and Parker Noble rose to third in the shot put, tossing it 74’ 9 ¾” between them as the Rams’ Will Cote and Matt Salbert claimed fifth place.
Zaire Ashley and Tanner Carter were sixth in the 55 sprint as Beeler and Jack Wilson were sixth in the 300 sprint, edging out J-D’s Nate Sturgeon and Mike Montanez (seventh) for a point.
J-D’s Zach Liebmann won the individual pole vault, clearing 12’ 6”, which led to third-place points. Brian Roth and Davis Elmore were sixth in the shot put, with Tamueras Howard getting to sixth in the high jump (5’ 10”) by himself as Sturgeon and Jaysen Ramos were sixth in the long jump.
