Heading into the two-week holiday break, West Genesee’s boys swim team is finding a familiar – and winning – formula.
The Wildcats’ trio of Collin Zapisek, Matt O’Donnell and Jake Mullett each won two races in its meet against Fayetteville-Manlius Thursday night at Nottingham (which serves as the Hornets’ home pool), leading to a 96-70 victory.
To get started, Zapisek and Mullett both swam legs on WG’s victorious 200 medley relay team, where a time of 1:48.16 proved one of the season’s best.
Then Zapisek went to the 200 individual medley and earned a second victory in 2:06.84. And in the 100 butterfly, Zapisek sped to first place in 57 seconds flat.
Mullett waited until the 100 freestyle, where he needed 51.71 seconds to beat the field. He earned a second individual race when he claimed the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.06.
O’Donnell took his turn in the 200 freestyle, easily earning first place in 1:55.47, and he moved on to gain a title in the 100 backstroke in 58.43 seconds. Sean Hagadorn gave the Wildcats a victory in the 500 freestyle in 6:03.90.
When the season resumes on Jan. 3, WG will be home to take on Cicero-North Syracuse (2-1), who has one of the top sprint swimmers in the area in Ben Mozo.
