Baldwinsville’s boys track and field team made up for Wednesday’s loss to Liverpool a big way.
The Bees nearly won Friday’s 59th annual New Hartford Invitational as, with 67 points, it topped everyone in the 22-team field except Cicero-North Syracuse, who won with 75 points.
Andy Fleming, Josh Perez, Matt Pond and Alec Peinkofer flattened the field in the 4×800 relay, winning in 8:07.71, more than 19 seconds clear of runner-up Holland Patent. Peinkofer would also break the two-minute mark in the 800-meter run, going 1:59.85 as Fleming (2:01.87) completed a 1-2 sweep.
Pond then joined Nate Wicks, Shay Sargeant and Rickey Sparks to win the 1,600 sprint medley, 3:46.08 to C-NS’s 3:48.87. Wicks, Sargeant, Sparks and Dan Walker took second in the 4×200 relay in 1:34.06 as C-NS (1:32.33) prevailed. Perez, Chris Twichell, Jack Martin and Steve Keegan were third in the distance medley relay in 11:21.55.
On his own, Sargeant gained second place (23.03 seconds) to Utica Proctor’s Chris Simmons (22.58) in the 200-meter dash. Wicks was third in the 400-meter dash in 51.16 seconds. Pat McNamara was sixth in the discus, with Kirk Anderson seventh in the shot put.
A day later, the B’ville girls were busy at the Rome Invitational at Rome Free Academy Stadium, getting 51 points to finish third behind Bethlehem and C-NS.
Gina Carnovale, Cierra Allen, Angelica Tomasello and Marissa Lathrop would win the 4×400, B’ville’s time of 4:06.82 more than two seconds ahead of runner-up Baldwinsville.
On her own, Carnovale took second in the 400 sprint in 59.91 seconds, beaten only by South Jefferson’s Skylar Pastor, who won in 58.58 seconds. Emily Soeder, clearing 5 feet in the high jump, finished second to East Syracuse-Minoa’s Nina Zesky (5’2”).
In the 1,500-meter run, Rachael Miller worked her way to third place in 5:04.41, keeping her times consistent. Ross, Kim Cushman, Emliy Thompson and Chandra Hewitt were third in the 4×800 (10:28.75) as Ross, by herself, took sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:24.41. Cushman, Tomasello, Quaneshia Ivey and Morgan Marshall were third (4:31.53) in the 1,600 sprint medley.
Carlie McNamara had a strong showing in the discus, throwing it 91’10” for fourth place. Stephanie Vasteno was sixth in the 100 in 13.79 seconds. Julia Nagy (28.23 seconds) edged Ivey (28.26 seconds) for sixth in the 200. Meghan Hull took sixth (8:10 flat) in the 2,000 steeplechase.
