A series of meets in October would determine whether the West Genesee girls swim team kept its crown as the top side in the CNY Counties League.
In the first of these tests, the Wildcats went to Auburn last Wednesday night and, led by distance-swimmer Kim Pedrotti, put together a 92-72 victory over the Maroons to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Pedrotti opened the meet by helping Gianna Branca, Brianna Smith and Jessie Brusa win the 200 medley relay in 1:59.10. Then, on her own, Pedrotti swam the 200 individual medley in 2:23.43 and blew past the field in the 500 freestyle, winning in a time of 5:35.74.
Smith would win, too, as she got through the 100 backstroke in 1:03.97. Olivia Castro tore through the 200 freestyle in 2:02.01, while Shannon Cahalan stepped up in the 100 butterfly, prevailing in 1:05.55.
Auburn’s MaryJane Leja swept the 50 freestyle (25.25 seconds) and 100 freestyle (55.19 seconds) and helped the Maroons take the 200 freestyle relay in a quick 1:44.37.
But in the closing 400 freestyle relay, Pedrotti returned and helped Castro, Smith and Becca Kanoza beat Auburn in a clocking of 3:58.51.
WG returns to its home pool at the high school in Camillus next Wednesday night to take on Cicero-North Syracuse.
