When all was finished in the heated OHSL Freedom division girls tennis race, Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy were dead even.
The Red Rams beat the Brothers in a 4-3 classic Tuesday afternoon, avenging a defeat by that same margin to CBA back on Sept. 12. Now both teams had one defeat in league play, to each other.
A big key for J-D was grabbing two of the three singles points. After CBA’s Olivia Messineo swept Kyrin Pollock 6-0, the Rams’ Rea Puka fought past Colleen Cavanaugh 6-4, 6-4, just as Hannah Stefl was earning a 6-2, 6-0 win over Amanda Ojugbeli.
So it went to doubles, where CBA earned a tough point when Jenna Bartolotti and Shannon Fitch got past Mary Miller and Karley Platenik 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Also, Shilpa Kamani and Becky Scullin had a 6-1, 6-4 win over Natalie Antosh and Katie Cieplicki.
J-D, though, earned the other two points to get the team victory. Elena Marchetti-Bowick teamed with Amanda Lee to beat Evie Lopoo and Olivia Rotondo 6-4, 6-2, while Hali Greenhouse and Lexi Lehrman handled Anna Kambhampaty and Sarah Roberts 6-3, 6-1.
Just before that, J-D rolled through Cortland and CBA beat Manlius-Pebble Hill bye equal 7-0 margins.
Against the Purple Tigers, Pollock, Antosh and Lee lost just four games in six sets of singles play. Miller and Platenik overcame a horrible start to beat Kaitlin Klinger and Brianna McAdams in three sets 0-6, 6-2, 6-4, the only match that went to three sets.
The Brothers only dropped one set against the Trojans, in fourth doubles, but Kambhampaty and Roberts still beat Christina Cerio and Haley Lavelle 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. Each of the singles matches proved one-sided, including Ojugbeli beating Caroline Blanck 6-2, 6-2.
From there, J-D moved on to beat East Syracuse-Minoa 6-1 on Wednesday, getting easy singles wins from Pollock and Stefl, plus three doubles sweeps. Only Erica Binion and Samantha Lobello broke the string for the Spartans, topping Miller and Platenik 6-4, 6-2.
And CBA would sweep Manlius-Pebble Hill 7-0 on Thursday, with Messineo, Cavanaugh and Ojugbeli easily handling singles matches. In fact, the Brothers won every contest in straight sets, getting the closest call in doubles, where Trisha Maini and Elizabeth Sasser got past Aoife Andrews and Maddy McDonald 6-4, 7-5.
