A full and exciting week of girls tennis action culminated with three local teams playing in invitational tournaments Saturday in scattered locales – and winning two of them.
Fayetteville-Manlius, at home, swept past Chittenango, Skaneateles and Westhill. Manlius-Pebble Hill won at Cicero-North Syracuse, edging Marcellus, 37 points to 33, while Jamesville-DeWitt, at the Cortland venue, took second to Baldwinvsille.
At F-M, the doubles teams of Rhiannon Iorio-Carly Romano, Caitlin Welker-Jessica Guarino, Laurin Goldberg-Alexandra Millimaci and Allison Donnella-Katie Roche each won their respective divisions with straight-set finals.
Up in singles, Kara Goldberg routed Westhill’s Eileen Fleming 6-0, 6-0 in the second division, with Adair Douglas taking the third division 6-2, 6-1 over Chittenango’s Kourtney Wilson.
MPH got through with two singles titles. Emily Barclay beat Colleen Stapleton (Marcellus) 6-4, 6-4 in the second singles final, while Hannae Lee swept the Mustangs’ Haley Randall 6-1, 6-3. Christina Cerio and Haley Lavalle won third doubles over Gena Rao and MaryKate McHale 7-5, 6-4, another case of the Trojans beating Marcellus.
As for J-D, it only won in second doubles, where Elena Marchetti-Bowick and Hannah Stefl got past B’ville’s Taylor Slink and Natalie Kot 6-4, 6-2. Four other times, the Red Rams lost three-set finals.
That included Kyrin Pollock, on the brink of a sweep in first singles, watching the Bees’ Kahlei Reisinger rally past her 4-6, 7-6, 6-3, and Rea Puka falling to B’ville’s Amari Pollard 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
In first doubles, Natalie Antosh and Katie Cieplicki dropped a narrow 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 verdict to the B’ville tandem of Maddie Fiello and Colleen Morgan. Homer’s Molly Gray and Emily Canask got past Karley Platenik and Mary Miller 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Much earlier in the week, J-D had fallen in a 4-3 showdown with Christian Brothers Academy, who swept singles play and picked off one doubles point to do so.
Olivia Messineo rolled past Pollock 6-0, 6-0, and Shilpa Kamani took out Antosh 6-2, 6-1. Also, in doubles Jenna Bartolotti and Shannon Fitch roared past Mary Miller and Platenik 6-0, 6-0.
As it turned out, the third singles match was quite important. Amanda Ojugbeli got taken to a third set by the Red Rams’ Amanda Lee, but held on in the final set to win 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. J-D rolled through the rest of the doubles matches in straight sets.
Going their own ways, CBA got past Cortland 5-2 on Wednesday, mostly by claiming all four doubles points. Only Trisha Manni and Elizabeth Sasser edged Annie Steve and Marissa DeFranco 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Messineo got the only singles point, blanking Maddison Dorward 6-0, 6-0.
In another local battle, MPH topped East Syracuse-Minoa 6-1. When Barclay rallied past Jeanine Kohler 4-6, 6-0, 6-0, she completed a singles sweep for the Trojans that also saw Alex Verbeck top Samantha Lobello 6-1, 6-0 and Hannae Lee beat Tess Eastman 6-3, 6-1.
ESM did get on the board when Erica Binion and Caitlin Underwood overcame a brutal start to beat Grace Allyn and Alaina McGinley 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. Otherwise, MPH’s teams of Sarah Malavenda-Olivia Sheppard, Scarlett Jaworski-Maddy McDonald and Christina Cerio-Kacey Jervis all won in straight sets.
The Spartans fell to Chittenango 5-2 on Wednesday, though Underwood beat Marie Perriello 6-2, 7-5, and Kohler handled Kourtney Wilson 6-2, 6-0. The Bears won all the doubles matches, though, as Eastman and Erica Binion fell in three sets to McKenzie Doig and Kaleigh Koegel 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
F-M swept Syracuse East 7-0 to run its win streak to 294 straight matches. It got to 295 in a row Thursday, F-M roaring past Cicero-North Syracuse 7-0 as, in both instances, the Hornets rarely dropped a game.
MPH was back on Wednesday, beating Fulton 6-1. Verbeck, by rallying past Faith Montgomery 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, completed a singles sweep with Barclay and Lee. Carlee Coutu and Caroline Blanck edged Madelynn Olon and Morgan Parkhurst 3-6, 6-3, 11-9.

The Cobras also fell to Skaneateles 7-0, while on that same Friday J-D blanked Cortland 7-0. In the latter match, the Red Rams did not lose a single set, though Miller and Platenik did work hard to beat Taylor Grossi and Annie Steven 6-3, 6-4.
