While it has not fallen all the way back into the Class A pack, the Baldwinsville field hockey team is now quite aware that work remains before it can climb back to the top.
Up against Liverpool Wednesday night at LHS Stadium, the Bees rarely had a chance to establish an attack, clinging to a defensive mode throughout a 4-0 loss to the Warriors.
Liverpool accumulated five penalty corners in the first 10 minutes. Time and again, though, the Bees’ defense, led by Danielle Piontkowski, bore down to take away chances, and Lindsay Farrell was on her way to an astonishing 30 saves.
Yet the Warriors kept pushing, and with 10:36 left in the half Holly Clark deflected home Emma Lamison’s shot from the point. Danielle Abold added a goal to make it 2-0 by halftime, with Lamison and Mary Fadden adding goals in the second half.
Just before confronting Liverpool, though, the Bees gave new head coach Kerri Davin her first victory at the helm when it shut out visiting Auburn 4-0 last Monday afternoon.
Gradually, B’ville’s pressure wore the Maroons’ defense down, and it scored three times in the second half to overcome goalie Allie Mack’s 19 saves.
Kayla Dubiel led the late charge, scoring twice, while Nicole Piontkowski and Claire Jennings earned single goals. Paige Corso and Paige McKenna each had one assist. Playing most of the game in the net, Morgan Starczewski stopped all seven shots she faced.
A busy week concluded for the Bees Friday, at Camden. Against the defending Class B champion Blue Devils, B’ville again lost by a 4-0 margin, despite Farrell’s 23 saves. Kianne Hinkle led Camden with two goals and one assist.
B’ville will look to recover at home this week in matches against Fayetteville-Manlius and Rome Free Academy.
