Due to its strong work this winter, the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill and Canastota wrestling teams both earned spots in Saturday’s Section III Dual Meet at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. They were placed in the same quarter of the bracket, as the Red Devils met Mexico in the first round and the Raiders were paired with no. 2 seed Fulton, owner of 17 Dual Meet titles, by far the most. And neither would win. Fulton, on its way to an 18th Dual Meet title, topped Canastota 56-21 and VVS fell to Mexico 45-27. Anthony Finocchiaro briefly gave Canastota a lead against Fulton, opening the match with a 93-second pin over Mike DeMauro at 130 pounds, but it lost the next five matches. Tyler Sirota (171 pounds) and Fred Sherman (189 pounds) both earned pins – Sherman finishing off Todd Oakes in 1:28 – while Joe Tiller, at 125 pounds, close the match with a 2-0 shutout of Derek Harris. Canastota and VVS decided to have a consolation match, and the Raiders would more than double the Red Devils’ total in a 53-25 victory. Billy Rinauto (135 pounds) opened with a second-period pin of Arik Prichard, with VVS answering as Aaron Prichard (140 pounds) pinned Jacob Lightall in 48 seconds and Gage Patry (145 pounds) earned a pin over Brendon Kitt in the third period. But the suspense soon ended as Canastota won the next seven matches, two of them forfeits. Zach Zupan, at 189 pounds, pinned James Simpkins in 1:06 as Sirota and Jacob Morris (285 pounds) also earned pins. Wyatt Albanese (152 pounds) topped Nathan Walts 8-2 as Sam Farfaglia (160 pounds) beat Jacob Deppmeyer 21-7. VVS would get late highlights when Zack Wheelock, at 119 pounds, topped Chris Bradley 16-6 and Jon Hudson (125 pounds) earned a 5-2 win over Tiller. But Zach Hannan (112 pounds) helped Canastota with a pin of Erick Faherty in 1:54 and, to close it out, Finocchiaro won his duel with Dylan Kavanaugh in a 12-4 decision.
