On a productive Friday afternoon, the Cazenovia baseball team put together 29 total runs in a doubleheader sweep of Solvay.
Rested and eager to hit, the Lakers, 4-9 entering the twin bill, began by taking over in the sixth inning of the opener to beat the Bearcats 16-8.
Through four innings, Cazenovia led 7-2, only to see Solvay erase that deficit with five runs in the top of the fifth, forcing Max Kellish from the mound.
Carter Franz pitched well in relief, and the big support came when, in the bottom of the sixth, the Lakers batted around and earned nine runs.
Amid the 17-hit attack, Franz hit the game’s only home run and earned three RBIs. Mike Blanchard and Drew Toole both doubled and matched Franz’s three-RBI effort as Forest Blanchard drove in two runs. Kellish, Zack Golden and Josten Smith drove in one run apiece.
The second game proved even more lopsided. Cazenovia’s 13-2 romp featured a four-run first inning and more offense after that as Forest Blanchard, pitching in relief of Ben Langey, eventually got the win.
Toole led Cazenovia at the plate, driving in three runs, while Franz and Golden earned two RBIs apiece. Smith and Kellish also drove in runs as Forest Blanchard tripled.
With no time to rest, the Lakers went to Homer on Saturday and took a 13-8 loss to the Trojans.
Homer used a six-run second inning to take charge, leading as much as 13-3 before Cazenovia scored five times in the top of the seventh to make it a bit closer. Golden, Toole, Jeff Hopsicker, Jordan Demo and Forest Blanchard each had one RBI. Homer’s Zach Blanden tore up Laker pitching with six RBIs on the day.
Now with a record of 6-10, Cazenovia faces Hannibal, Marcellus and Jordan-Elbridge this week, perhaps needing to win two of those games to secure a playoff spot.
