The International Boxing Hall of Fame has named actors Burt Young and Federico Castelluccio as parade grand marshals for this year’s 20th induction ceremonies scheduled for June 11 through 14 in Canastota.
Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy said it’s only appropriate to choose two grand marshals for the 20th anniversary of the museum.
“Twenty years ago about six or eight celebrities cut the ribbon,” Brophy said. “Since then the museum has grown in size truly preserving the history of the sport.”
Young is an Academy Award-nominated actor best known for his portrayal of Sylvester Stallone’s brother-in-law “Paulie” in the “Rocky” film series. He learned his craft from acting coach Lee Strasberg, has appeared in such motion pictures as “Back to School,” “The Pope of Greenwich Village,” “Transamerica,” “Convoy” and “Chinatown.” He also made television appearances on shows such as “The Sopranos,” “Law & Order,” “Miami Vice,” “The Rockford Files” and “Walker, Texas Ranger.”
“To be here at the Boxing Hall of Fame, amongst men of courage, valor and decipherment is for me, top draw,” Young said. “Any fighter, whether champion or aging six rounder, somehow seems touched or stamped with elements of dignity, honor and strength forever more.”
Castelluccio is best known for his portrayal of hit man Furio Giunta on the HBO series “The Sopranos” from 2000 to 2006. His film credits include “Made” with Jon Favreau, “Fire” with Robert Klein and “Pink Panther 2” with Steve Martin. He also appeared on television programs such as “NYPD Blue” and “Law and Order: Criminal Intent” and soap operas “As the World Turns” and “The Guiding Light.”
Born in Italy, Castelluccio is an accomplished artist and has exhibited his paintings in galleries in New York City and Washington DC.
“I am very honored to be a grand marshal for the Boxing Hall of Fame,” Castelluccio said. “I’ve been a huge boxing fan since I was a young boy and I happen to really admire some of this year’s inductees.”
Brophy said this year fans have registered to attend the four day event from 33 states and five countries to shake hands with local favorites Carmen Basilio and Billy Backus and 40 other boxing celebrities such as Marvin Hagler, Ken Norton, Micky Ward, Angelo Dundee and Leon Spinks.
Added to this year’s events will be a fireworks display.
