Cicero-North Syracuse high-jump stars Andy Kahl and Monique Roberts both came close to earning state championships during last Saturday’s state meet at Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University.
Kahl, the Section III record-holder in the high jump on the boys side, would clear 6 feet 7 inches at this event. That beat everyone except Rochester McQuaid’s Tomarris Bell, who managed to top 6 feet 9 inches and finished in front.
Roberts came even closer in the girls edition of the high jump. She cleared 5 feet 8 inches, only to see Dalilah Muhammad, from Benjamin Cardozo High School, clear 5 feet 9 inches to gain the top spot.
Of course, Roberts and Kahl were just part of a CNS contingent that went to Ithaca in pursuit of state honors.
Jasmine Thompson competed in two girls events, tying for 20th in the triple jump by going 33 feet 4 inches and also finishing 22nd (9.01 seconds) in the 55-meter hurdles. Gina Campagna cleared 5 feet in the high jump to share 17th place.
In the boys 4×800 relay, Jeff Azzoto, Nathan MacNabb, Jake Whritenour and Kevin Cusworth got together for a time of 8:14.52 that left them in fifth place. Warwick Valley won in 7:59.51. Azzoto also finished 20th in the 600-meter run in 1:27.97 as Craig Barber competed in the pole vault.
Meanwhile, Marcellus’ Craig Stogsdill did claim a New York State Public High School Athletic Association title in the 1,000-meter run.
In the final in Ithaca, Stogsdill found himself in an intense stretch duel with two senior foes – Chaminade’s Michael Schieck and Massapequa’s Frankie Dioguardi.
At the line, Stogsdill, in a time of two minutes, 33.66 seconds, beat out Dioguardi (2:33.75) by nine-hundredths of a second for that public-school title and finished second overall.
Schieck, who runs for the Catholic Association, won the race in 2:33.45 to earn the Federation title. Tyler Stewart (C0lonie, 2:34.57) and Aaron Ghobrial (Pine Bush, 2:34.78) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
