With Adam Groesbeck tearing up the sprints, plus enough help in other places, the East Syracuse-Minoa boys track and field team earned top honors at last Tuesday’s OHSL Freedom division championship meet in Chittenango.
By the time all the scores were added up, the Spartans had 111 points, just ahead of Phoenix (96 points) as Jamesville-DeWitt (93.5 points) grabbed third place in a tightly bunched field.
Groesbeck would speed to victory in the 400-meter dash in 51.87 seconds and also took the 200-meter dash in 23.29 seconds. He was also fifth in the 100-meter dash (12.03 seconds).
Arnes Hadzic would gain his own pile of points, running to second in the 100 (11.64 seconds) and third in the 200 (24.56 seconds), and backing that up with fourth-place finishes in both the long jump (19 feet 4 1/2 inches) and triple jump (38 feet 8 3/4 inches).
Zach Johnson earned third place in the 110-meter high hurdles (17.03 seconds) and was third in the 400 hurdles (1:02.35), t0o.
This consistency spilled over into distance races, where Jeff Sweeney ran to second in the mile (4:44.35) and gained third place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:29.17. His teammate, Nick Sadlocha, grabbed the runner-up spot in the 3,200 in 10:24.20 and was sixth (4:53.29) in the mile. Pete Ferstler added a third-place time of 12:04.13 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Greg Lothridge earned fifth place in the triple jump (38 feet), just behind Hadzic, and got sixth in the high jump (5 feet 4 inches), as Zach Van Auken earned fourth place in the pentathlon, earning 2,224 points.
ESM did not win any relay, but it did earn second place in both the 4×800 (8:48.97) and 4×400 (3:43.12), adding two more points by taking fifth (47.95 seconds) in the 4×100 relay.
J-D contended by winning four different events. Alfredo Justiz got two of them on his own, running the 100 in 11.49 seconds to edge past Hadzic and also winning the long jump, going 20 feet 5 1/4 inches.
Justiz also teamed with Vincent Graham, Jon Boll and Mark Smith to win the 4×100 relay in 45.21 seconds. J-D was also third in the 4×400 (3:45.92) and fourth in the 4×800 (8:56.85).
Just as that was going on, Adam Tyson was prevailing in the pole vault as the only athlete to clear 11 feet 6 inches.
Graham took second place (53.26 seconds) to Groesbeck in the 400, and also was second in the triple jump by going 39 feet 11 1/2 inches as David Salbert (39 feet 2 inches) was third. Smith was fourth (11.87 seconds) in the 100.
