Girls track Bears win OHSL Freedom title

When they added up the totals from regular-season meets, the Chittenango girls track and field team had to share first place in the OHSL Freedom division with East Syracuse-Minoa.

By the time they got to the league championship meet Monday at Spartan Stadium, though, the Bears were done with sharing.

With a total of 129 points, Chittenango fended off healthy challenges from both ESM (106 points) and Jamesville-DeWitt (107 points) to come out on top.

On her own, Marshay Zamlowski was resposible for 28 points. She won twice, beating the field in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.42 seconds and joining Kaylee Greene for sweep in the long jump. Zamlowski won with 17 feet 3 inches as Greene (16 feet 3/4 inch) finished in second place.

Zamlowski nearly got a third title, in the triple jump, but her best leap of 33 feet 3 1/4 inches was topped as Cortland’s Margaret Knight (34 feet 2 inches) prevailed.

As for Greene, she had her own 28-point outing, sweeping the hurdles events. She ran the 400 hurdles in a time of 1:10.05, more than eight seconds ahead of anyone else, and backed that up by taking the 100 high hurdles in 16.86 seconds, the only competitor to break the 17-second mark.

Also, in the 4×100 relay, Chittenango prevailed as Zamlowski and Greene teamed with Christina Gorden and Marjorie Pulver for a top time of 53.49 seconds, just beating J-D (53.86 seconds) to the line.

In yet another sweep, Gorden gladly took second place in the 200-meter dash (29.17 seconds) as her freshman teammate, Alyssa Giarosso, won the race in 28.79 seconds.

The Bears had a steady presence in distance races. Michelle Brandt ran to second place in the 3,000-meter run in 10:44.51, and added a third-place effort in the 1,500-meter run in 5:01.49. Lauren Anderson finished third in the 800-meter run (2:39.92) and Kelsey Pudney ran to fifth place in the 400-meter dash in 1:06.16.

More importantly, Pudney combined with Giarosso, Pulver and Linsay Royer to earn second place in the 4×400 relay in 4:33.52. In the 4×800, Lauren Anderson, Kelly Anderson, Katrina Karbowniczak and Kristin Harosia finished fifth in 11:13.50.

Chittenango returns to that same ESM track on Thursday for the Section III Class A championship meet.
