So the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team’s remarkable win streak lives for another year.
In what was, by far, its biggest challenge of the season, the Hornets stood up to 11-0 West Genesee last Tuesday afternoon and beat the Wildcats, 6-1 , to run that win streak to 145.
A big crowd gathered at the WG courts, and long matches could continue into the night because of lights installed above those courts.
Two of the contests went to three sets. In singles, Mike Muraco lost a first-set tie-breaker to Craig Shepard, but rallied and produced a 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 6-0 victory, this on top of one-sided sweeps by fellow singles stars Greg Kreitzer and Matt Izant.
In that other long match, Shay Chen and Andrew Thomas were taken to tie-breakers in the second and third sets, and could not come out on top, falling to Jeff Kurtz and Tim Gallivan 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2).
Prevented from the sweep, F-M still won everywhere else. Erik Calancie and Ian Winkler beat Kunal Shetty and Jon Papazides 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), while Vikram and Vivek Nayar beat Matt Zell and Eric Tressler 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Also, Jeremy Nash and John Chick topped Mike Spicer and Josh Barrett 6-4, 6-1.
